Summary

It is an exciting time for HM Land Registry as we continue on a major transformation programme. HMLR's ambition is to become the world’s leading land registry for speed, simplicity and an open approach to data.

We are now looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join our Digital, Data and Technology team to help us to achieve this.

You will join our award-winning Digital, Data and Technology Directorate which is the in-house IT division at the heart of the move to a digital, data-driven organisation with the ambition to provide our customers with cutting-edge digital services.

Our existing software systems and services form part of the critical national infrastructure, safeguarding land and property ownership valued at £7 trillion. This enables over £1 trillion worth of personal and commercial lending to be secured against property across England and Wales.

Job description

Do you have an appreciation of emerging technologies along with a proven ability to be able to assess technical opportunities and make recommendations for strategic direction and future proofing?

If so, as a Principal Software Engineer you will lead on software development activities across multiple teams, including management of capabilities, resourcing and recruitment and be a source of technical expertise. You will keep up-to-date with the technology landscape and new technologies and provide leadership in software application design.

Within your role, you will have the opportunity to focus on a particular area of the business or in a technical speciality such as front-end development, CI/CD environments or back-end systems. You will also be responsible for ensuring that development work can be done effectively, relying on context provided by Lead Software Engineers and development teams.

You will be a source of expertise and direction on software development methodologies and as a member of the Software Development Practice’s leadership team, you will embody an open and positive approach, to support HM Land Registry progressing the DDaT Software Development profession, understanding all roles and helping to build our community

Responsibilities

To meet the requirements of this role, you will have previous experience in line management of technical job families and working within a wider technical and non-technical leadership team. You will have an in-depth knowledge of application design and a strong understanding of modern software development practices, methods and techniques.

In addition, you are a skilled and experienced planner, implementer and leader of change in a complex and evolving environment and have the ability to be able to turn vision and ideas into practice.

For more information about the job, please see the attached candidate pack.

Please be advised that HM Land Registry does not hold a UK Visa & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker License sponsor and are unable to sponsor any individuals for Skilled Worker Sponsorship.

We have offices all over the UK and you will need to be based near one of them. This role will be mostly home based with occasional travel to the office depending on business needs.

Where an individual taking up the responsibility will be based in Swansea Office, the ability to speak Welsh is desirable.

The Digital, Data and Technology Directorate is the in-house IT division for HMLR. We are currently recruiting several roles to ensure the directorate’s teams contain the right blend of skills, experience and knowledge to take our major transformation programme forward. These teams are at the heart of the move to a digital, data-driven organisation with the ambition to provide our customers with cutting-edge digital services.
