Principal Scientist - Cellular & Molecular Pharmacology Assay Design and Screening – Leads Discovery & Optimization, Lawrenceville, NJ

The Leads Discovery & Optimization Group leverages technology, innovation, and broad scientific knowledge to deliver comprehensive in vitro data packages to support all phases of drug discovery at BMS.  We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative scientist to drive assays supporting Cardiovascular, Fibrosis and Immunology therapeutic areas. This candidate will be expected to have a breadth of cell-based assay and in vitro pharmacology expertise to support drug discovery projects from hit identification through lead optimization.  Applicants must have scientific and technical understanding of high-throughput techniques to develop complex cell-based screening assays to be run on automated platforms.  Expertise in assay automation, high content imaging and flow cytometry platforms is preferred.  The candidate will be responsible for technology innovation for high-throughput disease screening platforms.   The candidate should possess strong collaborative and written/verbal communication skills and a positive attitude to interact with multiple stakeholders.   He/she should demonstrate personal leadership within the group, scientific leadership both at the bench and at data analysis and be adept at multi-tasking.

Position Overview/Key Responsibilities

  • Ph.D. in Pharmacology, Immunology, Biochemistry, or Cell Biology with a minimum of 3 years pharmaceutical industry experience OR BS/MS in related area and minimum of 10 years applied assay design and high-throughput screening experience in the pharmaceutical industry is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of immunology, cell biology, and pharmacology are required in addition to understanding physiologically relevant cellular models.
  • A wide breadth of superior assay design and screening skills in both biochemical and cell-based assay formats as well as experience in the application of modern technology and automation is required.
  • Expertise in assay automation; plate-based high content imaging or flow cytometry assays is preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in big data analysis is required.
  • A “cutting edge” awareness of new technology advances and scientific knowledge in the high- throughput screening field to apply for drug discovery program support is essential.
  • Ability to create and maintain an effective scientific network through teamwork, excellent problem-solving skills and open collaborative style are of critical importance to the success of this role.
  • Ability to communicate scientific methods and results clearly.  Will be responsible for scientific presentations and reports for internal review meetings and scientific journals.
