Role Summary

The Principal Product Designer is the sole subject matter expert in product design at Alaska Airlines. As an individual contributor, this role defines long-term strategy for our physical and digital experiences and exercises considerable latitude and initiative to solve complex strategic programs that support business initiatives.

Key Duties

  • Acts as the lead subject matter expert in product design, leading projects across an employee journey in the airport by setting the vision for experience, visual design, and user interface; creating the space for others to collaborate, adopt, and evolve it.

  • Collaborates with cross-functional leadership and creates a clear long-term vision of the future of digital design at Alaska Airlines by applying a forward-thinking, strategic mindset in collaboration with fellow designers and engineers. Drives progress of this vision through collaboration, alignment, and decisiveness and takes responsibility for every detail, every step of the way.

  • Exercises considerable latitude and initiative through usage of the documentation framework for all pieces of the design system (i.e. components and patterns) by collaborating with fellow Product and UI designers to inform the design language for Alaska’s digital solutions.

  • Leads processes and drives the execution of user-centered design best practices for usability, prototyping, and visual design while balancing user needs with business goals. Provide clear direction for engineering teams in implementing states, modes, and conditions while bringing the brand to life across our digital experiences – enabling our guest facing employees to be remarkable at their jobs.

  • Leads high-level user-centered design best practices, from interaction design, information architecture and usability fundamentals to accessibility standards, balancing user needs with business goals and technology capabilities.

  • Makes decisions on ways to continually represent processes and experiences by collaborating with all designers and cross-functional partners to lead the creation, iteration, and development of UI designs and design patterns in multiple product focused areas and acts as a mentor to designers.

  • Manages large-scale initiatives that span across teams and business groups to ensure all design efforts uphold to standards. Ensures alignment meets the objectives of the initiative while also identifying opportunities to enhance our experiences otherwise not conceived by the initiative.

  • Supports and fosters a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

  • 7 years of experience in Product Design, Experience Design, or similar.

  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in Human-Computer Interaction or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree

  • Portfolio showcasing design skills that demonstrate critical thought process, digital cross-platform experience, ability to elevate a brand’s visual language into digital experiences and knowledge of how design adds business value.

  • Skills in Figma and/or latest design tools (i.e. Adobe CS, XD, Sketch, Abstract, etc.) with demonstrated ability to create shared understanding within cross-functional teams.

  • Demonstrated experience with rapid prototyping to show product flows, facilitate shared understanding and directly collect guest feedback.

  • Working knowledge of lean, agile product delivery, MVP, optimization tests and workflow tracking tools such as JIRA, Azure DevOps, VersionOne, etc.

  • Strong understanding of user centered design best practices as they relate to native mobile experiences (iOS), cross-browser compatibility, UI patterns across platforms, and designing inclusively for users of all abilities

  • Excels as a deadline oriented conceptual and visual thinker, with a broad toolset for organization and communicating complex ideas.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) to enhance both customer and employee satisfaction.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to drive outcomes in the best interest of the company.

  • Native iOS design experience.

  • Enterprise tool/application design.

  • Intermediate/Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)

  • Strong understanding and representation of visual aesthetic that showcases the ability to elevate a brand’s identity.

  • Balance of visual and data-driven mindset with a proven history of continuous self-development.

  • Knowledge of web and mobile-based technologies such as Swift, SwiftUI, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.

  • Copywriting skills including UI copy, microcopy and calls-to-action.

  • Detailed oriented and highly organized, with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to cope with conflicts caused by competing priorities.
