Role Specific Details

This position is a dedicated team player that is knowledgeable in creating processes, procedures, guidelines, and standardization. Able to research and gather requirements for automation: build, test, and deploy automation workflows using industry standard tools with minimal oversight. Research and gather requirements for monitoring, design, build, test, and implementation with efficiency, and make for a dramatically better overall customer experience.

Role Summary

The Principal Enterprise Systems Engineer is a subject matter expert for multiple technologies for Alaska Air Group (AAG) and its subsidiaries. As an individual contributor, this role defines long-term strategy for the ITS team and exercises considerable latitude and initiative to solve complex problems. They must demonstrate expert skills in Leadership, Project Management, Containerization/Automation, Cloud, Hardware/Software Architecture & Best Practice, Security & Compliance, and Enterprise Architectures.

Key Duties

  • Act as a subject matter expert and enterprise technology thought leader on AAG platforms.

  • Define the long-term strategy (at least 12 months) for AAG platforms and their implementation.

  • Act as a product owner for Containerization Technologies – Define long-term roadmaps, make decisions on tactical needs of the technical team while developing user stories, setting priority and backlog grooming.

  • Focused on continuous improvement in system reliability through automation and monitoring.

  • Lead cross divisional enterprise infrastructure projects related to Automation and Cloud initiatives.

  • Collaborate directly with Enterprise Architecture and Security to develop and plan the platforms architecture and security strategies.

  • Lead vendor management to better understand future capabilities while advocating for features that are beneficial to Alaska.

  • Act as a forward thinker to help ensure that new capabilities are evaluated, implemented, and operationalized.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

  • 7 years of experience in IT, or related area.

  • Bachelor’s degree, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.

  • Technical engineering experience required.

  • Professional experience with Cloud, Containers, Automation, DevOps Best Practices, CI/CD methodology, Information Security principles.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross functional teams to understand objectives, gather automation requirements, write technical specifications, and perform in a lead role.

  • Demonstrate experience in coaching and mentoring system engineers.

  • Experience estimating effort and establishing timelines for projects.

  • Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to collaborate with a variety of team members.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • Experience applying Agile methodologies, system development lifecycles, DevOps best practices.

  • Implement automation, effective monitoring, and infrastructure-as-code.

  • Deploy and maintain CI/CD pipelines across multiple environments.

  • Experience with implementing all components of automation.

  • Automate our operational processes as needed, with accuracy and in compliance with our security requirements, all while ensuring that all meet our customer service standards and reduce errors.

  • Experience with containerization, clustering, service mesh, pipeline automation (Docker, OpenShift, Kubernetes, GKE, AKS).

  • Experience with hosted cloud environments (Azure, AWS, Google).

  • Experience conveying knowledge to diverse groups of people, such as classes, brown bag meetings, or seminars to ensure a consistent application of standards is established.
