Job Description

At BEIS, we pride ourselves on creative communications which show how we are building a United Kingdom fit for the future.

Our agenda - which includes issues from energy security, mergers and takeovers and workers’ rights to the biggest investment in science and innovation in a generation - means we are always in the news.

We're looking for expert communicators with proven skills in media relations to join our team, drafting high-quality plans to tell the story on some of the Government's highest priorities.

The successful candidates will be experienced in translating detailed information into engaging and easy-to-understand language, delivering creative communications plans that encompass a range of channels including traditional and social media.

The talented and high-profile BEIS press office is staffed by a team of committed, professional communicators. As a member of the Government Communications Service, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills with both formal and informal training and mentoring.

So if you want to work in a fast-paced environment at the heart of Government, this could be the role for you.

Responsibilities

Create multi-channel media plans to ensure activities reflect policy developments and the emerging news agenda and inform the wider communications strategy and the goals of BEIS Ministers and the Government Communication Service (GCS)

•            Deliver creative content that tells real-world story on support for businesses, working constructively with senior policy colleagues and partners to gain expert opinion.

•            Provide considered communications advice to ministers, special advisers and senior officials on new, developing and existing policy.

•            Demonstrate excellent written and editing skills to deliver quality and timely press releases, rebuttals and lines to take in response to developing stories.

•            Deliver strong evaluation of media strategies to inform future proactive and reactive media campaigns.

•            Participate in the out-of-hours duty rota.

Skills and Experience

•            Experience of working and leading teams in a fast-paced media office, with highly effective media, rebuttal and crisis management skills.

•            Excellent written and oral communications skills.

•            Sharp news sense, excellent judgement, strong political savvy and outstanding communications skills.

Behaviours

We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

  • Delivering at Pace
  • Communicating and Influencing
  • Seeing the Big Picture

Benefits

BEIS offers a competitive mix of benefits including:

A culture of flexible working, such as job sharing, homeworking and compressed hours.

Automatic enrolment into the Civil Service Pension Scheme, with an average employer contribution of 27%.

A minimum of 25 days of paid annual leave, increasing by 1 day per year up to a maximum of 30.

An extensive range of learning & professional development opportunities, which all staff are actively encouraged to pursue.

Access to a range of retail, travel and lifestyle employee discounts.

A hybrid office/home based working model where staff will spend a norm of 40-60% of their time in the office (minimum of 40%) over a month with flex dependent on balancing business and individual need (from September 2021, depending on how the public health guidance evolves).
