The Role
The Portfolio Manager is a key member of the Chief Investment Officer’s team. The team designs and executes liability driven investment strategies, including portfolio construction, and repositioning to support the acquisition of new reinsurance business. These strategies and associated portfolios must meet business needs (sufficient return on capital, regular investment income), while considering Soteria’s appetite for investment risk, execution risks, and asset-liability matching.
Responsibilities
Develop transaction-specific asset and hedging strategies that optimize yield versus capital within regulatory, accounting, and risk management constraints
Adequate treatment of all investment and ALM related risks during scoping and pricing phase of a transaction, including asset pricing assumptions
Set the direction, management and oversight of in-force portfolios, internal managers, external managers, and legal entities
Assess the performance of Investment mandates and contribute to the assessment of portfolio management
Works with internal and external portfolio managers to determine the best path to execution, including analysis of existing portfolios and the creation of target portfolios
Communicate asset strategy to various interested parties
Negotiate investment guidelines and treaty terms with clients to deliver the flexibility necessary to manage asset risk and generate target returns
Lead the transition of the portfolio received from the client to Soteria’s target portfolio
Suggests and reviews new tools/models to improve new business pricing process
Develops relationships with external contacts and internal cross-functional areas
Operates independently with minimal required guidance in day-to-day operations
Directs the efforts of the team including management and development of direct reports
Qualifications
We are seeking candidates who have the following minimum qualifications:
MBA/Master’s degree in relevant field and 8+ years of relevant work experience
Multi-asset portfolio management and investment strategy structuring experience within a reinsurance environment for large annuity block transactions
A working understanding of statutory capital models including Bermuda Solvency Capital Requirement and Risk-Based Capital
Experience managing fixed income portfolios in life insurance industry especially asset liability management
Demonstrable track record of the successful implementation of investment strategies, especially in an insurance context
Prior work experience with corporate bonds, infrastructure debt, long lease real estate, private corporate debt, and structured assets
Exceptional investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Ability to work and lead teams in a dynamic and high-pressure environment while managing multiple concurrent deadlines
Expert ability to work collaboratively with individuals across a wide variety of operational, functional, and technical disciplines
Persuasion and negotiation skills when working with internal/external customers to resolve issues and problems
