Job Description

About the job

Summary

At the Government Digital Service (GDS), our mission is to build a simple, joined-up and personalised experience of government for everyone. Using our unique position at the centre of government, we develop services that work for the user, however complex the underlying systems may be. We believe that ensuring things work for end users is the only way to realise the efficiencies that come with digital transformation.

Our focus is on delivering five missions in the following areas:

• GOV.UK as the single and trusted online destination for government information and services

• Joined-up services that solve whole problems and span multiple departments

• A simple digital identity solution that works for everyone

• Common tools and expert services

• Joined-up data across departments.

Job description

You’ll be responsible for analysing user behaviours in government digital services and content. You’ll focus on digital analytics but also work with data from other sources. Your insights will drive prioritisation, helping product owners to focus on features that work best for users.

This is not a database manager or management information role, it is a web analytics role.

You’ll be proactive and work effectively in a multidisciplinary agile team to help them identify “what success looks like”, develop hypotheses, implement tracking, ensure data is accurate and significant and then provide analysis and actionable insight through effective storytelling and data visualisation.

You'll be expected to work with the whole agile team, initially on one project, but likely moving to another team in time.

As a Performance Analyst you’ll:

• deliver analysis, especially using digital analytics, to help product owners make decisions based on evidence

• lead the project team to measure and assess outcomes, for example, 'what success looks like', developing hypotheses and measurement frameworks

• collect relevant and accurate digital data by managing and developing digital analytics instrumentation - working with developers and user researchers

• identify where user experience can be improved and working with teams to overcome barriers and provide recommendations for action based on user data in easily understandable and engaging ways - such as show and tells, blog posts, dashboards

• contribute to the performance analysis community; assisting with training and knowledge transfer of digital analysis principles to wider audiences and expanding your own and others’ data analysis skills

• line management of any associate performance analysts, when recruited.

Responsibilities

We’re interested in people who:

• have experience in digital analytics and data analysis, instrumenting, administration and analysis

• have a detailed understanding of, and practical experience of using different data tools to transform and analyse different data sets

• have a good understanding and hands on experience working within web analytics with tools such as Google Analytics

• able to provide insight and translate data in a clear and concise manner, including the use of visualisation tools such as Data Studio or Tableau

• experience of discovering and sharing analytical insight with stakeholders with various levels of analytical expertise and at all levels of seniority

• some experience in gathering and understanding technical requirements and working with developers to build suitable technical solutions.

The selection process as a standard for all of our roles consists of:

• An application screening process

• An interview

GDS offers hybrid working for all employees. This means that everyone does some working from home/remote working and also spends some time in their local office. You will agree to your hybrid working arrangement with your line manager in line with your preferences and business needs.

If we receive a high number of applications, we may decide to include an additional round (this would typically be a short telephone interview or assessment/exercise depending on the type of role).

A reserve list will be held for a period of 12 months, from which further appointments can be made.

Candidates that do not pass the interview, however, have demonstrated an acceptable standard will be considered for similar roles at a lower grade.

This role requires BPSS security clearance.

Benefits

• Civil Service pension with an average employer contribution of 27%

• 25 days annual leave + an extra day off for the Queen's birthday - increasing to 30 days after 5 years of service

• an environment with flexible working options including hybrid working

• learning and development tailored to your role

• a culture encouraging inclusion and diversity

• interest free season ticket, tenancy deposits and holiday advances

• bike loans

• eye care vouchers

Any move to our department from another employer will mean you can no longer access childcare vouchers. This includes moves between government departments. You may however be eligible for other government schemes, including Tax Free Childcare.
