Description
Join IWMI's team in Uzbekistan as a National Researcher - Water Resources Management specialist to carry out hydrological modelling studies for Ferghana Valley and Aral Sea Regions. You will develop, calibrate and validate models, including the sensitivity analysis, and document the application at different spatial scales. You will also conduct data reviews, plan regional investigations and interpret watershed parameters using of Geographic Information System (GIS) applications to develop and review model inputs and outputs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Collect hydrological variables from the national and international data archives and pre-process primary data in image processing software applications.
- Collect and compile earth land surface datasets including rainfall, digital elevation model (DEM), watershed characteristics, soil characteristics, and land use land cover data from various satellite remote sensing archives.
- Calibrate and validate hydrological models for selected river basins in Central Asia.
- Analyze the collected datasets for computing the changes in water storage on different spatio-temporal bases and determine watershed characteristics to identify the potential water storage zones.
- Organize stakeholder consultations and meetings and disseminate research findings
- Prepare journal articles, briefs and reports; write progress reports and contribute to donor and other project reports
- Perform other related duties, assignments and special projects
Requirements
The successful candidate will posses the following:
- PhD degree in water resources, hydrology or a related subject with three years minimum experience.
- A minimum of 3 years experience of working in developing hydrological models using various softwares and familiar with the models.
- A good record of peer reviewed publications on relevant subjects in well reputed international journals.
- On-the-ground experience working on water resources management solutions with farmers and water users.
- Experience designing and implementing approaches for data scarce environments.
- Experience in developing hydrological models for multiple river basins with experience in remote sensing and GIS tools.
- Experience in working on a diverse range of irrigation scales, and a good knowledge of irrigation design and the operation and maintenance of small, medium and large irrigation systems.
- Demonstrated original thinking, creativity and innovation applied to his/her discipline.
- Experience designing and implementing approaches for data scarce environments.
- Good analytical and numerical skills and the ability to process large temporal and spatial datasets in a Python environment.
- Ability to use advanced spatial analysis and Geographic Information Systems tools and hydrological modeling approaches for multiple scale assessments.
- Independent and critical scientific thought including a sound understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of spatial tools for water resource assessments at different scales.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary environment, with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
- Excellent verbal, and written communications skills in English.
- Good command in Russian and Uzbek language will be an asset.
