The Downstream Manufacturing Pernis site (Rotterdam) is a great place to work with ample learning and development opportunities for employees who are looking to deepen and broaden their technical and professional skills. The Pernis site is one of the largest petrochemicals sites in Europe with over 550 hectares processing facilities. The site includes the largest refinery asset in Europe, crude oil intake with a highly complex configuration. Upgrading units consist of a hydrocracker, cat cracker, HF alkylation, HYCON, visbreaker, Platformer-Aromatics complex and gasification plants. The site has recently embarked on a project to build a SDA (solvent deasphalter) unit. Furthermore the Pernis site is integrated with the Moerdijk Chemicals site and together we underpin significant trading activity on both feedstock and product side. The site also includes several chemical assets that integrate Moerdijk Chemicals and the Pernis Refinery: polyols, hydrocarbon solvents, MTBE, propylene splitter, DMK, IPA and glycol ethers. The site has access to 2 crude terminals and provides products to customers via rack, pipe, barge and coasters.

What’s the role?

Mechanical engineering is an important discipline in a large petrochemical complex such as SNR to secure sustained technical integrity and reliability of pressure equipment and processes. The purpose of the job is to provide expert advice in the field of mechanical engineering, focusing mainly on pressure vessels and piping. The job includes advise on new equipment as well as assessment and advice for existing (degraded) equipment (trouble shooting & fitness-for-service assessments).

Furthermore, this job is also to manage the long-term improvement agenda for his of her discipline and development and health of the mechanical engineering skill pool.

  • To ensure that advice given on procurement, application, modification, design, installation and fitness for service in the field of mechanical engineering and piping standardization is fit for purpose and customer focused.
  • To give direction to, to guard and to promote technical and economical sound application of technical requisitions (Including standardization)
  • To establish and deploy appropriate technical standards and regulations, harmonized between the sites and aligned with Downstream, P&T and Governmental regulations. The pursuance of standards implementation is implicit.
  • To participate in internal (Shell) and external workgroups with manufacturers/suppliers and governmental representatives on the technical developments and standardization.
  • To establish continuous improvements of the technical services with respect to added value, aiming the sections position to be preferred supplier of these services.
  • To identify, share and implement Best Practices and technical developments by networking within Downstream, P&T, Industry and Technical/Scientific Institutions.
  • To contribute to the technical evaluation of engineering, maintenance and construction contractors, suppliers and consultants.
  • Defines mitigations and authorizes deviations from standards/ processes and delegates such authority where appropriate
  • To contribute to internal and external (technical) safety audits and studies like HEMP, HAZOP, IPF and FAIR.
  • To provide information and/or training in the field of mechanical engineering and piping standardization enabling staff to perform efficiently and effectively and accommodating changes of workload and competencies.
  • Developing skills and competencies in the discipline in line with changing business needs and technical developments in the areas associated with project/ maintenance engineering with specific emphasis on equipment in the discipline and demonstrating asset integrity and process safety.
  • Maintain own discipline standards/ guidelines/ procedures/ instructions and adopt external standards.

What we need from you?

  • You have at least a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Significant (Field) Mechanical Engineering experience in Chemical or Petrochemical industry.
  • A sound knowledge of applicable national and internationals codes, rules and standards (ASME, EN, RToD, API).
  • Fluency in English and at least some level of Dutch. We can help you learn the latter.
