We are currently looking for a Mechanical & Electrical Technician (with Electrical bias) to join our growing and diverse teams across the UK.

As a Mechanical & Electrical Technician on our waterway you will play an important role using your technical expertise to assist with the programme of planned preventative maintenance, dealing with repairs and reactive tasks within a defined area, working on mechanised moveable assets such as swing bridges.
A technical foundation in C&G Wiring Regulations, C&G Inspection and Test is essential; with the potential to develop your skills in hydraulics via team training.
The post holders will be required to work Monday to Friday – 37 hours per week.
Location & Coverage
Reporting to the base in Devises, this role will involve regular travel along the Kennet & Avon canal.
Occasionally you may also be required to work in other areas of Wales & South West Region.
Residing near these areas will be essential to accommodate the regular travel along regional Wales & South West canal networks (https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/about-us/where-we-work/wales-and-south-west).
Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience
This role supports Canal & River Trust’s aims to improve safety and increase the number of people using the inland waterways network. Your skills will be used to maintain our waterways infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
Work safely ensuring the safety of others and contribute to safe working in all activities.
When required manage volunteers in the delivery of works to ensure they are completed safely and to the correct quality, whilst maintaining volunteer satisfaction and delivery to programme.
Support for the delivery of a programme of M&E maintenance and repair works, by staff and assisted by contractors as required, to the ensure the waterway infrastructure is well maintained, whilst maximising customer satisfaction for e.g. repairs and maintenance to structures, automated locks, servicing and repairs to plant and equipment. This will also involve the monitoring of contractor activities when they are working as part of the team.
Provide mechanical, electrical, and marine support to assist in the resolution of mechanical and electrical situations as they arise.
Working under supervision, produce recommendations to minor problems undertaking design where appropriate.
Provide and support the delivery a first level of response for reactive works, at all times, to ensure the safety of customer and the availability of the network.
Working to a planned timetable with support from the length inspection team survey, inspect, monitor and report on condition of M&E assets. Maintain appropriate data including recommending fitness for purpose. Input results of inspections into SAP via notifications.
Supervise third party and contract works to delegated levels, providing feedback and reports to contract management team and the contractor – monitoring health & safety and performance.
Provide customer service through operation of the Trust’s assets in a safe and timely manner and responding to customer enquiries to maximise customer satisfaction e.g. dealing with customer questions whilst working for the Trust.
Display the Trust values and behaviours at all times.
Skills & Qualifications:
Qualifications and Attainments
Maths and English GCSE.
HNC (or similar level) in Electrical and/or Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
C&G Wiring Regulations, C&G Inspection and Test.
Authorised Person in 2 of the following areas: Mechanical, Electrical or Scada – Learning Event VEEN024. CAATs competencies.
Work experience - Proven experience of delivering works to time, specification, and budget. Some experience in customer service. Proven safety related experience or recognised safety qualification.
Skills - Good interpersonal and communication skills. Full driving licence. Working with equipment. SAP working knowledge desirable.
Safety - Comply with Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policy and defined standards, report incidents, accidents and near misses. Assess the risks and make adjustments to work methods where appropriate. Ensure all equipment (PPE, plant, materials etc.) is appropriate for the task. Consider your own and others behaviour.
Safeguarding - To be aware of your own responsibilities regarding safeguarding and to support our commitment to providing safe environments and working practises that promote and protect the safety and welfare of children, young people, and adults at risk at all times.
