Role Summary
The Principal, Market and Competitive Strategy is a sole subject matter expert in building long-term strategies that elevate the effectiveness of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air’s network function. As an individual contributor, the role defines long-term strategy for the network and alliances team and exercises considerable latitude and initiative to lead significant cross-functional initiatives.
Key Duties
Contributes to the long-term strategy of the network by developing 24-month (and beyond) market views which will influence key decisions around long-term market competitiveness and the strategic direction of our network.
Serves as the subject matter expert on Alaska’s market positioning in a shifting competitive landscape. Deeply understands and effectively communicates where, why and how Alaska is positioned to win.
Augments industry datasets with Alaska-proprietary information to develop novel ways of evaluating new and existing market opportunities. Works cross-functionally to build new datasets from internal and external sources including primary and secondary market research.
Responsible for managing key business intelligence tools that drive analysis and decision making across the division. Develops new tools that streamline and automate the extraction of market and competitive insights.
Owns network strategy communication by preparing executive-level reporting dashboards and presentations using both Tableau and PowerPoint. Leverages advanced analytics to uncover insights that aren’t readily apparent.
Leads and supports the execution of special projects that impact market and network development activities including fleet planning and airport infrastructure planning.
Develops contingency planning processes to identify and plan for potentially disruptive events to the airline industry. Evaluates potential responses that Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air could employ.
Provides ad-hoc analysis and input as required in support of commercial planning decisions, company presentations, and internal/external communications.
Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills
Required
7 years of experience in airline/network planning, strategy consulting or another analytical field, preferably within the travel industry.
Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, statistics, mathematics, finance or related discipline, or an additional two years of training/experience in lieu of this degree.
Advanced Microsoft Excel, Access, and PowerPoint skills.
Expert analytical skills and understanding of analytical processes.
Strong communication and presentation skills, with ability to work & communicate across all levels.
Preferred
MBA and/or applicable master’s degree.
Knowledge of Alteryx, Tableau and/or related database and visualization tools.
