Job Description

Bechtel is seeking a strong and collaborative manager with a focus on internal communications to become the next Manager of Communications.  The manager will direct global corporate communications operations on a daily basis and are accountable for the development, management, and execution of issues management, external affairs, communications, and community affairs programs and to create long-term plans and goals for the organization.  The ideal candidate exhibits strategic management and leadership skills at the highest level and in a wide variety of contexts related to media, civic, and communications programs.  The Manager of Communications has overall responsibility for communications personnel activities, including providing training and counseling to subordinate communications managers, recommending and participating in compensation programs, and overseeing the career development process for the group.

 

Job Dimensions: 

Reports to and receives functional guidance and direction from the Manager of Corporate and Government Affairs as part of the Regions and Government Relations organization.

Provides day-to-day functional and operational supervision to corporate communications personnel.

The Manager, Corporate and Government Affairs, provides functional supervision to communications personnel deployed to the company’s business units, service organizations, offices, and projects.

Maintains working relationships with Bechtel’s executive management and their staff.

Maintains active relationships with the senior business unit, function, service organization, office, and project management.

Maintains close professional relationships with media, civic, and industry leaders in the communities of Bechtel business.

 

Responsibilities:

Utilizing corporate communications technology tools develops and implements an external affairs and communications strategy that promotes corporate initiatives and corporate business development. 

Guide, encourage and coordinate the activities of the Global Business Unit communications teams to ensure messaging is consistent and complementary, displaying a “One Bechtel” approach.

Manage the professional development program and career path for communications professionals within Bechtel; mentor the communications teams across corporate and business unit lines.  Overseeing the recruitment, retention, training, and development of personnel.  

Plans and manages the corporate communication operating budgets.

Advises management on critical public and internal communications issues, objectives, and planned responses.  Provides guidance, coaching, and support with respect to effective communication strategies and techniques.

Establishes and maintains linkages with appropriate media, civic, and industry counterparts, as well as other interested parties, in the communities of Bechtel’s business.

Oversees the management of Bechtel’s public communications and media relations programs, including internal training activities, to ensure consistency and compliance with the corporate, business unit, service organization, office, and project-level messages and protocols.

Oversees the management of corporate external and internal communications activities, including schedules, content, and format of Bechtel’s various corporate print, video, and internet publications. 

Counsels on the development and delivery of external and internal communications activities, including strategic planning, face-to-face engagement, electronic news, intranet management, and change management, that align the goals and objectives of employees with those of their respective business units, service organizations, offices and projects.

Oversees the support of corporate communication events planning and management activities.

 

Basic Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Communications, International Affairs or a related field and 15 years relevant work experience.

Proven ability to collaborate and generate impact across organizational boundaries.

10+ years experience in senior media relations, public affairs, communications, and/or community affairs roles with a proven track record in managing highly complex issues on a global basis for large multi-national corporations.

5+ years experience leading media relations, public affairs, communications, and/or community affairs teams dispersed across multiple regions or business units for large multi-national corporations, including managing budgets and departmental operations.

Effective project management skills: ability to define project goals and deliverables, lead and motivate a team of issue management and communications professionals, and implement key programs on time and within budget.

Strong analytical and strategic planning skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Previous work experience in a global/international environment.

Demonstrated understanding of the Bechtel project life-cycle, requirements and how they interface and impact the overall corporate affairs organization.

Experience leading a communications team on a Bechtel project.

Experience with multiple Bechtel Global Business Units.

Competent user of Microsoft Office suite of products.

Expert analytical and strategic planning skills.

Demonstrated ability to balance short-term and long-term priorities and manage simultaneous projects.

Master’s Degree in Business, Communications, International Affairs or a related field, with 20 years experience.
