Interviews will be at Wallington at 9 February 2022

What it's like to work here

Our Let Estate in Northumberland is spread across an area encompassing the Roman remains of Hadrian’s Wall to the unique “castle” island of Lindisfarne on the Northumberland Coast. The management of our let estate property, together with the relationships we have with our tenants, underpins our national, circa £50m annual rental income and is essential to the delivery of our land and property conservation work.  This role will be based at one National Trust property, Wallington, but you will be required to travel to all locations necessary in the North East for which a National Trust vehicle will be provided for your use.

The National Trust is the largest private landowning charity, and you will support us with the maintenance of the properties it owns and protects.  Our let estate and holiday cottages are based around 4 key and distinct areas.  Hadrian’s Wall, one of the most recognisable and photographed landscapes in Britain.  Wallington is set in the middle of Northumberland, one of the great estates of the north, owned by a single family, loved, and embellished by succeeding owners for nine generations.  Cragside is renowned as the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity, with all its incredible innovations, can claim to be the house where modern living began.  With cottages on Holy Island and at Low Newton by the Sea, the Northumberland Coast, this role offers an insight into the different vernacular architectural techniques spanning the entire county.

What you'll be doing

Working as part of a small team you’ll carry out high quality repairs, maintenance and refurbishments to our properties across our holiday cottage and let estate portfolio. Whether it be residential, agricultural or commercial buildings, you’ll be a trusted contact for our existing tenants or carrying out work in preparation to welcome new tenants.  You’ll know what methods and materials are needed to carry out the task in hand and will strive to use resources efficiently and effectively.

Often, you’ll work alongside other trades who are contracted-in by the National Trust and you will carry out tasks which complement their work in order to maintain, make safe or improve our properties.

You’ll be proactive in your approach to risk management and ensure risk assessments are undertaken and all work is compliant with the relevant legislation and policies.

You’ll work in collaboration with colleagues in operations and consultancy and liaise with tenants so that expectations are managed and regular updates are communicated.

Who we're looking for

  • Expertise in one or more general trades including joinery skills.
  • An understanding of traditional buildings/structures and able to make sound judgment on the appropriate extent and method of trade works within such settings
  • Good time management including prioritising and managing own time to deliver agreed scope and quality of work
  • A good understanding of the standards of health & safety management (including CDM) in your own work and when supervising others
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent team player and the ability to build collaborative relationships both internally & externally

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.

Wherever you’re from, and whatever your background, we want to hear from you – and it doesn’t matter if you’re jam first, cream first, or even if you don’t like scones at all. Everyone is welcome.

Benefits for working at the National Trust include:

  • Flexible working whenever possible
  • Free parking at most locations
  • Free entry to our properties for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
  • Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
