Job purpose

BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for a “dynamic, results driven” individual to join as Lead Systems Engineer – System Function Feature Owner supporting the Systems Engineering competency at our Propulsion Technical Center (PTC) in Auburn Hills, MI.

BorgWarner is system responsible for delivering complete propulsion systems which include power electronics (inverters,) eMachines (motors,) gearbox, and related software all integrated in one package. The complexity of these systems goes beyond electronics and our features require working closely with multiple engineering disciplines and technologies.

The Lead Systems Engineer role is a blend of technical and leadership responsibilities. The engineer is responsible for the successful delivery of their feature on customer projects while establishing the roadmap for the incremental updates to their feature. The role requires a good understanding of systems engineering principles and a solid technical understanding within the feature. This role is one of the pillars of our growing systems engineering organization and is a key to successfully delivery on our projects.

Key responsibilities

  • Work across engineering competencies, suppliers, and partners to deliver on Systems Engineering commitments
  • Lead technical development, from a feature perspective, with cross-functional team through the development and verification of electrified propulsion systems
  • Lead the technical analysis, trade off studies, FMEAs, design reviews and customer presentations
  • Negotiate the technical requirements, scope and subcontract deliverables for feature
  • Interpret Functional Safety (ISO 26262) requirements for the product development team
  • Support the definition and continuous improvement of systems engineering processes, methods, and tools • Act as an ambassador for Systems Engineering Principles and best-practices
  • Collaborate and Mentor other engineers, be a role model for BW Beliefs

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science
  • 5+ years’ experience in related engineering field applying Systems Engineering principles throughout the product life cycle in one or more of the following areas:
    • Automotive electronics product development
    • Power electronics, specifically motor drive inverters
    • Systems Engineering
  • Leadership skills – planning and organizing commitments
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated and driven personality with the ability to work under limited supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English language
  • Preferred knowledge or experience:
    • Awareness of or experience in multiple engineering disciplines (electrical, mechanical, test, software, controls)
    • Requirements management methods in a structured tool such as Polarion
    • Change management methods in a structured tool such as JIRA
    • System modeling in SysML or other modeling language
    • ASPICE and ISO 26262 experience
    • Power Electronics hardware and/or software design experience
    • Analysis techniques such as FMEA, FTA, etc.
    • ASEP, CSEP, or ESEP certification
