Job purpose    

The Lead Product Engineer - Mechanical, Lead reports to the Product Engineering Mechanical Manager. In this role, the Lead PEM will work closely with other Driveline Engineering team members and associated competency teams such as e-motor and power invertor.
The Lead PEM, typically does not have any direct reports. However, this role is responsible for leading an engineering team through the product development process. Typically, this includes leading individuals from other groups responsible for CAD, component design & release, CAE/NVH, build, & test/validation. It also involves interaction with other functional areas such as; sales, program management, electrical machines, power electronics, systems, manufacturing, purchasing, suppliers, quality and warranty.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and/or support the engineering activities associated with the product development process for integrated drive module mechanical hardware from new business opportunity through production launch. This includes:
    • Developing proposals for the mechanical hardware & supporting the estimation process for new business opportunities.
    • Performing mechanical hardware system level design calculations.
    • Issuing design work orders and providing direction to CAD as necessary to develop the product design.
    • Issuing lab work orders providing direction for builds, tests, component modifications, and inspection.
    • Issuing purchase requisitions to obtain parts for build events and component testing.
    • Providing direction for or issuing CAE/NVH requests, as needed, for analysis of assemblies and components.
    • Providing direction for or issuing component design requirements analysis requests providing the necessary information for the analysis of component designs.
    • Leading a team in the creation and maintenance of mechanical hardware assembly/system level DFMEAs.
    • The development and monitoring of ADVP&R's.
    • Conducting & leading meetings including design kick-off, open issues, design release, prototype build, root cause and others as necessary.
    • Developing engineering specifications for the product.
    • Reviewing and approving drawings and specifications for the product.
    • Creating prototype build/control plans, reviewing and approving prototype material for builds, and signing off mechanical hardware prototypes for usage in internal and external testing.
  • Provide engineering support for the product. This includes:
  • Supporting electrical machines, power electronics, Systems engineers to ensure the integration of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Supporting validation engineers in preparing the appropriate fixtures and completing testing requirements.
  • Supporting System Engineers in the analysis of customer requirements ensuring the product meets performance, packaging and serviceability requirements, and in the resolution of open issues.
  • Supporting sales with engineering data for estimates, including cost reduction opportunities, and with technical data for customer interaction.
  • Supporting the production facility in DFM/DFA activities and as a technical resource for the product throughout its life cycle.
  • Supporting global supply chain organization as a technical resource for sourcing decisions and technical discussions.
  • Lead the engineering change management process for production products as required.
    • Engineering change management with tools such as DFMEA, DRBFM, DoE methods
    • Drive process to closure with plant manufacturing team members

What we’re looking for

  • Minimum of a Bachelors in Engineering required, Mechanical Engineering preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering related work experience required, 8+ years preferred
  • Experience in powertrain, electric drive modules, driveline and/or transmission systems is preferred
  • Experience and/or training in the development and maintenance of DFMEAs is required
  • Experience and/or training in Root Cause Analysis is required
  • Experience and/or training in APQP is preferred
  • Experience and/or training in DFM/DFA is preferred
  • Manufacturing and assembly process knowledge is preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required
  • Ability to use common software required
  • Knowledge of TS16949 and IATF16949 is preferred
  • Ability to read prints and knowledge of GD&T is preferred
  • Ability to understand and perform stack calculations is preferred
