Position Summary

The Summer Lab Automation Internship Program at Translational Sciences Lab Automation offers students the opportunity to gain experience in our laboratory environments while working at multi discipline projects. Summer lab intern works with different laboratory equipment to perform a wide range of tasks from simple to complex, learn and applying a combination of instrumental and offline programing to script and optimized the workflows which allow better logic and efficiency for lab tasks. the student will learn of manually setup and control lab procedures/techniques and state-of-the-art instruments. Interns will also have the opportunity to apply their background and skills gained in education to various process and workflow improvement.

By end of the internship, the student will acquire knowledge of basic automated platform software use and minor programming, apply the knowledge on developing automated solutions and building matched workflow. The student will experience with high-throughput automated sample processing organization and structure. At the same period, the intern will also learn the basic lab automation tasks, different instrument operation and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work on lab automation program optimization projects. Be guided and self-learning on instrument programing/script, then work out an optimized version from existing workflows.
  • Testing of automation scripts on the automated liquid handler to verify the instrument performance for the specific workflow.
  • Design and program automated scripts for applications in lab. Perform the basic lab automation tasks, different instrument operation and maintenance.
  • Assist with laboratory activities, moves and workflows, mechanical troubleshooting and repair of instrument errors and issues.
  • Proactively drive safety and GLP compliance, ensure quality support resolutions and maintain site & safety protocols.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Completed Sophomore or Junior Year of a four-year bachelor’s degree in laboratory science, chemistry, biology, engineering or science-related field.
  • Base understanding of laboratory processes and applications. Knowledge and skill in a programming language (examples C++, Python, Visual Basic) are preferred.
  • Ability to adapt and gain new technical skills for a continual and rapidly changing research environment. Must present a professional and positive service-oriented disposition.
  • The successful candidate will be self-motivating, have good interpersonal and communication skills, be able to multi-task, be highly organized, have a strong desire to succeed in a multifunctional team setting, proven ability to meet goals working in a group of peers, and proven innovative thinking.
