Our Highway Structures Engineers play a key role in the Asset Strategy Team and are responsible for helping deliver a specialist technical engineering function; providing the Trust with internal professional expertise and developing an optimised Asset Management Plan for long-term investment in the operation and maintenance of the Trust’s Highway Structures.
Reporting to a Senior Engineer, you will become a key member of the Highway Structures Team; an enthusiastic group of 6 Engineers and Inspectors that specialises in bridges, aqueducts and other important structures; optimising long-term investment in the operation and maintenance of the Trust’s Highway Structures.
You will be an experienced professional looking to take on the challenge of conserving and improving infrastructure that originates in the industrial revolution for safe and continuing use. We will also consider taking on enthusiastic graduates looking to further their career in technical engineering.

Location & coverage
Our Engineer vacancy will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to attend our main hub spaces as and when required for team working a collaborative meetings. Significant travel throughout the regional waterway network will also be expected to enable site visits and to conduct improvements.
The regularity & flexibility of travel will be discussed further at interview stage.

About the role
We're very proud to be the custodians of one of the largest collection of industrial heritage, covering 2,000 miles of the UK's canals and rivers and over 8,500 different structures, many of them listed. The majority of our canals and navigable rivers are over 200 years old, and they still work as they were designed to. This is quite remarkable and reflects the innovation and skill of the original engineers and the continuing dedication and expertise of our team today.
As a Highways Structures Engineer you will work with colleagues across departments, and with a variety of partners internally and externally, to deliver works programmes and support the implementation of the asset strategy for the Trust. You will support decisions on asset investment priorities which are driven by a risk management approach.
Key Accountabilities:
Contribute to the development and implementation of the Trust‘s bridge and highway structures Asset Management Strategies.
Responsible for undertaking scheduled asset inspections, ensuring that they are completed to plan, approved and recorded in the prescribed format and to the prescribed quality.
Assess the outputs from inspections, make informed recommendations and proposals on the required work, accounting for; risks, cost, time, resources, heritage, environment and safety.
Analyse structures to determine their load carrying capacity.
Brief and advise colleagues at all levels on technical matters associated with Highway Structures.
Engage with the Trust‘s internal and external customers.
Contribute to efficiency by working in accordance with agreed work plans and Strategies.
Display the Trust values and behaviours at all times.
Ensure that diversity and inclusion are integrated into all aspects of Trust life and promote inclusion by challenging behaviour, practices, actions, or decisions.
Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
Degree, HND, or equivalent experience in Civil or Structural Engineering.
Membership of a relevant professional body at an appropriate level e.g. Student or Graduate member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
Demonstrate relevant experience either at work or in education.
Knowledge and understanding of historic infrastructure, either at work or in education.
Excellent written and spoken communication skills: be able to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts.
Able to work flexibly and support other areas of the business in an appropriate manner, taking account of overall business priorities and negotiating resources as appropriate.
Evidence of, and aspiration for, Continuous Professional Development. The Trust has a registered training scheme with the ICE which is open to this post, either for transfer from an existing employer or a new registration.
Good understanding of relevant industry Health, Safety and Welfare requirements
Awareness of the Trust‘s governance, financial controls and systems of compliance.
Valid driving licence appropriate for vehicle to be driven.

What We Offer
In addition to your annual base salary of £30,000 to £35,000, we offer Car Cash Allowance of £390 per month, great holiday entitlement, access to generous DC pension scheme and other benefits. £34,680 - £39,680 inclusive of allowances.
