High Voltage Battery Vessel Controls Engineer

We are seeking a team member who can lead the design and development of High Voltage Battery Packs, Chargers and on-board Power Distribution Systems for a broad range of marine and mobile vehicle applications.  The successful candidate will have several years of experience with vehicle electrification in the automobile, transit bus or commercial vehicle industries.   This position represents a chance to define the approach non-automotive industries will take on the development, integration and validation of high voltage energy storage systems and charging infrastructure.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead the vessel integration of high voltage marine battery packs to power electric propulsion systems
  • Design vessel propulsion control systems for manual, joystick and automated control of vessel propulsion and control
  • Apply deep industry knowledge of the electronics supply chain to drive performance and cost improvements to marine battery pack systems
  • Guide the marine battery charging systems development team to ensure compatibility
  • Meet function safety requirements and verify compliance per ISO standards
  • Define supplier requirements through battery pack and interface requirement documentation
  • Help define the operating environment and ingress protection design methodologies for large format battery packs
  • Understand and execute tradeoff studies between available technology solutions
  • Manage partnerships with key suppliers to deliver on new product programs
  • Support compliance and certification to applicable standards for marine energy storage systems
  • Train and mentor less experienced battery systems engineers
  • Coordinate vessel-level system activities with the support of a cross-divisional team
  • Works with all engineering disciplines needed to develop system requirements and architectures and establishes systems capabilities and operational concepts
  • Spans all phases of the product development cycle, from concept development and system architecture to product launch and field support
  • Develop team capability to support future cost-effective electrification development

Basic Qualifications

  • BS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.  An MS in a vehicle electrification engineering discipline is strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of high voltage (350V+) power electronics and/or electric drive integration
  • Five or more years in engineering related to electric propulsion and/or energy storage systems
  • Experience delivering multiple electric vehicle projects to an OEM
  • Recent hands-on experience in the areas of systems integration, product verification and validation of large, complex systems into a multi-national organization
  • Competency in coordinating cross divisional activities

Preferred Experience/Skills:

  • Experienced in the practical considerations of design for manufacturing
  • Simulation of electric power and energy storage systems using best practice industry tools
  • Materials science knowledge and material selection experience to meet design objectives
  • Ability to evaluate system architecture trade-offs for Electric Propulsion Systems
  • Experience performing competitive analysis either internally or through 3rd party engineering firms
  • Knowledge of electrical safety standards

This position is based in the ASG Tech Center in the Grand Rapids/Lowell Michigan area.   This is the primary location for our North American product development and testing facilities.
