Job Description

The Head of Insight and MI is responsible for successfully delivering insight analytics using operational data and other data sources to provide predictive models and business cases based on what could happen across a number of business scenarios and opportunities. These business cases will drive enhancements and improvements into how Royal Navy training is delivered and the outcomes achieved. The role is also responsible for managing the MI team and the delivery of the Information Management Service and KPIs.

The role will work closely with and support the Royal Navy Training Management Group (TMG) and Capita Senior Leadership Team (SLT) in respect to understanding their business needs, future aspirations and how the business becomes data led.

Collaborates with other leadership team members across the Royal Navy, Capita and its Team Fisher Consortium Partners to ensure the operation is data driven and insight led.

Job Description:

What you’ll be doing:

  • Direct management responsibility of the Insight as a Service (IaaS), data engineering and MI teams which includes leading a team of data engineers, data scientists, reporting and optimisation analysts.
  • Delivery responsibility of the contractual Information Management Service (IMS) and KPIs including feedback of potential business benefits and improvements.
  • Management and responsibility of the IasS analytics tooling and supporting data to ensure it delivers all IaaS contract obligations.
  • Act as the delivery customer and business stakeholder for the future data platform and analytics tooling as delivered from the Modernisation Plan to ensure it meets your future business needs.
  • Participates in relevant change and growth opportunities providing strong insight, analytics and data expertise and knowledge including operational, business outcomes, commercial, financial, solution and delivery options.  
  • Deliver operational direction and guidance to the IaaS and data engineering teams and sponsor close collaboration with Selborne leadership team, to ensure the Selborne business, operational teams and client maximises the knowledge, information, and insight available from the data.
  • Manage key analytics and data stakeholders within the Royal Navy, MOD and Defence Digital especially those in delivering future change and strategic direction.  

What we’re looking for:

  • Degree in numerate subject (Maths, Statistics, Data Science, Operational Research), Msc preferable.
  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • Good understanding of data engineering and data platforms including but not limited to Oracle, MS Azure and Palantir Foundry.
  • Excellent data visualisation software knowledge including but not limited to PowerBI, Tableau, OBIEE
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills. The ability to explain complex problems and technology with clear solutions and associated costs / implications is essential. Must be comfortable presenting to a senior level audience. 
  • Ability to find pragmatic solutions to problems and issues which ensures compliance but also meets the needs of the business and supports operational delivery.  
  • Demonstrates the ability to develop strong and trusted relationships with key stakeholders to support and enable strategic business goals.
  • A strong influencer and demonstrate proven ability to provide credible, pragmatic, and commercial solutions to business problems.  
  • Solid understanding of applied statistics, probability, and machine learning techniques
  • Experience with data engineering, data management, and visualisation tools
  • Experience in working on multi-disciplinary teams
  • Successful track record in supervised and unsupervised machine learning
  • Experience within the Defence Sector/Royal Navy would be highly desirable
  • Ability to be security cleared to SC or above

About Project Selborne

Project Selborne is a wide scale, 12 year transformation of Royal Navy Training.  The contract worth GBP 1 billion was awarded in December 2020 to a consortium led by Capita to deliver and modernise training for the RN.  The consortia of partners known as Team Fisher includes Raytheon UK, Elbit Systems UK, Fujitsu and University of Lincoln together with 14 other UK-based suppliers.
