Our technology teams in the UK work closely with HSBC’s global businesses to help design and build digital services that allow our millions of customers around the world, to bank quickly, simply and securely. We also run and manage our IT infrastructure, data centres and core banking systems that power the world’s leading international bank.

Our multi-disciplined teams include: DevOps engineers, IT architects, front and back end developers, infrastructure specialists, cyber experts, as well as project and programme managers. 

We work in small, agile DevOps teams with colleagues around the world from our offices at the Bluefin Building in Southwark, our global headquarters in Canary Wharf, and multiple other locations around the UK including Sheffield, Leeds, Barnsley and Birmingham. 

Following extensive investment across our Technology and Digital domains and with plans for continued expansion throughout 2021 and beyond, we are currently seeking a Head of Infrastructure Architecture for ITID and Cybersecurity to join HSBC

Overview 

What you will be doing;

• Context: Technology Domains Architecture consists five domains: Application, Infrastructure, Cloud, Cyber Security, Data.
• The Head of Infrastructure Architecture for ITID & Cyber is accountable for shaping the infrastructure roadmap within HSBC for ITID & Cyber services, on-premise and on-cloud.  There are two primary areas of accountability:
• To define, maintain and own the enterprise infrastructure architecture for ITID and Cyber, ensuring compliance with group standards and policies;
• To lead the Infrastructure Architecture Practice activities and support a healthy community of infrastructure architects across all GB/GFs. 

This role will carry out the following activities:

• Lead and own the development and implementation of architecture strategy and standards pertinent to Infrastructure for the areas of ITID and Cyber Security;
• Ensure that the target architecture is implemented consistently across the ITID & Cyber functions and their respective DevOps teams;
• Introduce new practices, processes, operating model, techniques, products, services, technologies and standards where needed against identified use cases, via the appropriate governance bodies;
• Lead the governance of Infrastructure Solutions architecture and design decisions, following the architecture governance model and aligning to the Infrastructure Design Authority;
• Stay abreast of technology trends and advise ITID and Cyber about potential benefits / impacts.

The Head of Infrastructure Architecture for ITID and Cyber has responsibility for:

• the technical design & architecture for all infrastructure solutions in ITID & Cyber;
• ensuring governance & communication of infrastructure architecture;
• representing ITID & Cyber in architectural discussions and 
• matrix managing the global team of Infrastructure Architects for ITID and Cyber.

Customers / Stakeholders 

• Build relationships with the Chief Architects for ITID and Cyber. Ensure that the application / product architecture roadmaps include infrastructure and align with HSBC’s infrastructure strategy;
• Build relationships with the Area Heads within ITID and Cyber.  Ensure that the designs are delivered in time to meet project deadlines.  Provide ad-hoc support to the big infrastructure technology challenges for ITID & Cyber;
• Build relationships with IT Infrastructure platform and technology owners and their respective technical and enterprise architects;
• Represent ITID & Cyber in the Infrastructure Architecture management team.

Leadership & Teamwork 

• Matrix manage the global team of Infrastructure Architects for Infrastructure Architecture. This involves supporting and influencing Architects who do not directly report to you;
• Work closely with senior Infrastructure Architects for all lines of business, to ensure consistency of process & architectural solutions;
• Take a lead role in the Infrastructure Architecture Practice. Work closely with the other members of the Infrastructure Architecture community to develop principles, processes, communications and implementation of technical architecture.

Major Challenges 

• This role involves the architecture & design of some of the most critical systems in the bank, supporting ITID & Cyber. These have very significant operational, quality, risk and cost factors, but also support ITID & Cyber and hence have high profile time to market & regulatory pressures to balance.
• The role involves regular interaction with senior and exec-level managers at GCB2 level downwards, and requires challenging design decisions, timelines or costs when appropriate.

Role Dimensions

• All aspects of Infrastructure Architecture and Design for ITID & Cyber.
• All designs for systems supporting ITID & Cyber
• Matrix Management responsibility for global team of individual contributor, subject matter experts, architects or lead designers (GCB4 and 5 levels).

Qualifications

What you will bring to the role;  

To be successful in this role you should have proven experience within the Technology sector with knowledge of the following skills:

Business

• Experience of Financial Services and international banking;
• Knowledge of infrastructure and security products and practices.

Technical

• Knowledge of infrastructure technologies, such as Public Cloud (Google, Amazon, Microsoft), virtualization, networking, middleware, databases, storage, web services & internet, messaging systems; containers;
• Knowledge of Solutions Architecture principles & frameworks.

Other

• Ability to build relationships with business, senior management, technical & development teams;
• Ability to explain & discuss technical concepts to all levels of expertise depending on the audience;
• Ability to champion ideas from concept through to production;
• Ability manage & motivate staff through direct or functional management.

This role will primarily be London or Sheffield based but some travel may be required.
