The Head of Heart Failure & Cardiomyopathy Development is a senior executive level role considered critical to the sustainability and success of the BMS R&D pipeline, and ultimately to bringing innovative and transformative cardiovascular treatments to patients with serious unmet medical need. The Head of Heart Failure & Cardiomyopathy Development is responsible for the development of late-stage heart failure and cardiomyopathy assets, creating the vision for their development, lifecycle, and delivery.  This individual will oversee Development Program Leads responsible for the development of mavacamten and other late-stage activities.  The Head will be responsible for the execution of portfolio strategy, collaborating with early development / translational medicine / discovery. Through partnerships with matrix leaders, the Head will support the assessment of business opportunities informed by scientific, clinical, and commercial aspects. This individual will be a member of the Cardiovascular Development Senior Leadership Team.

Specifically, the Head of Heart Failure & Cardiomyopathy is accountable for:

  • Develop end-to-end disease and asset strategy for the heart failure / cardiomyopathy portfolio, in partnership with R&ED and Commercialization

  • Translate strategy to the efficient development and execution of registrational and clinical programs from POC through P3 and post-marketing

  • Deliver high quality assets which have the potential for a competitive profile with substantial business/strategic impact to address the unmet medical needs of patients

  • Represent CV development in integrated leadership forums including those focused on business development strategy and execution in partnership across TAs/TRCs  

  • Serve as function matter expert and oversee development of functional expertise

  • Engage cross company expertise and utilize advisory groups and governance bodies to define, revise, and champion asset program level strategies and implementation plans

  • Oversee clinical budget allocations and capacity planning

  • Navigate complex and dynamic internal and external healthcare environment; bring a broad understanding of domestic and international issues relative to the pharmaceutical industry

  • Supervise other DPLs and/or oversee other independent programs of greater complexity

    - Provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and career development, including engagement and retention support to the Development Program Leads in order to maximize their potential and ensure the delivery of the portfolio and health of the matrixed organization

  • Develop and promote a workplace culture that values diversity of thought, promotes integrity, and creates an atmosphere that supports coaching and fosters accountability

Experiences and expertise required:

  • MD, PhD, PharmD, or equivalent advanced degree of relevance (fellowship and/or post-doctoral training in cardiovascular medicine preferred)

  • 12+ years of experience in the drug development process including demonstrated strong investigative medicine skills and leadership experience in academic or industry setting

  • Deep cardiovascular knowledge and expertise

  • Expertise leading programs in the early and/or late development space, including relevant regulatory expectations, health authority interactions and filings, and overall drug development principles

  • Successful Track Record of leading through influence, working across complex, organizational matrices, and translating organizational strategies into long-term action plans

  • Travel Required: Domestic and International travel may be required.
