Head of FX Prime IT

Our technology teams in the UK work closely with HSBC’s global businesses to help design and build digital services that allow our millions of customers around the world, to bank quickly, simply and securely. We also run and manage our IT infrastructure, data centres and core banking systems that power the world’s leading international bank.

Our multi-disciplined teams include: DevOps engineers, IT architects, front and back end developers, infrastructure specialists, cyber experts, as well as project and programme managers.

Brief overview of the business areas

GIS (Global Intermediary Services) is the client facing/fee-earning part of the GFX (Global Foreign Exchange Business) and consists of a number of business services aimed at Custody, Real Money, Banker Broker Dealer and Hedge Fund clients (FX Prime, FX Overlay, FX Custody and Alternative Execution Services).  The GIS IT team develops and supports the FX systems for these businesses and is approx 50 people.

What you will be doing;

The Head of FX Prime IT is responsible for the development and operation of HSBCs FX Prime trading platform. This is a global role facing off to the UK and US based business heads and managing a global development team of approx. 15 people in multiple locations. We prefer our development managers to be engineers – so whilst you will not 100% developing software you will be hands on and from a Java development background.

What you will be responsible for; 

FX Prime is actively invested in each year so you will be responsible for developing the systems e.g.

Scaling the system to cope with richer/wider risk metrics and higher trading volumes.

Onboarding high profile clients into the platform.

Developing our FX Prime portal with new client features.

Automating and maintaining infrastructure, including Cyber patching.

Integration with third party post trade systems e.g. for compression, matching, limit management.

FX Prime is an entire end to end trading system so this role has responsibility for all aspects from client onboarding to development of new features.

You will have responsibility for approximately 15 developers, and will be responsible for mentoring, career development and performance management.

In MSS IT we are DevOps – this means no separate support and development teams. Everybody does production releases and everybody does support. This empowers development managers and their teams to architect systems to allow automated, frequent releases whilst having fewer incidents. To achieve this we implement micro-services and we focus a lot on automation for deployment, testing etc.

Requirements

Essential skillset/experience

Experience of leadership of large Global teams in a Front Office IT environment. Ideally in FX but not essential.

Hands on engineering and java development experience/background.

Ability to contribute to an engineering culture – through sharing, collaboration and empowering engineers to experiment and iterate on tools.

The role will primarily be London based at our Head Office in Canary Wharf but with flexibility to work from home.
