Global Director, Sustainable Packaging

This role serves to lead Mars Wrigley´s global packaging sustainability strategy and program in order to address the impact of our packaging on nature and deliver on our goals and commitments with regard to recyclability of consumer packaging, incorporation of recycled content and reduction in virgin plastic use. This senior packaging role is critical to the success of the business given our societal impact and the high and increasing expectations of customers, consumers and regulators in this essential area.

What are we looking for?

  • Masters level or equivalent in business, packaging, sustainability or other closely related field

  • Outstanding English written and communication skills

  • World-class technical expertise in sustainable packaging, ideally at another global FMCG company, supplier, or customer

  • 10+ years professional experience leading breakthrough change in complex organisation environments

  • Experience leading cross-functional and globally dispersed teams and people.

  • Strong decision making in ambiguous and pressurized situations and willingness to take responsibility and stand alone.

  • Excellent people management skills and experience, adaptable to different cultures globally.

What will be your key responsibilities?

DELIVERY OF MARS WRIGLEY PACKAGING SUSTAINABILITY GOALS

Mars Wrigley has established goals for the % of our portfolio that is i) reusable, recyclable or compostable, ii) made with recycled content iii) made with virgin plastic. This role is ultimately accountable for the delivery of these goals at a global level.

STRATEGY AND PLAN

Accountable for the ongoing strategy and its deployment covering i) high level design and material choices by format and geography in line with Mars Design For Recycling Guidelines and industry and customer standards and expectations, ii) supplier innovation and sourcing strategies for alternative materials and recycled content, iii) infrastructure developments we are dependent on and must advocate and partner towards, including a focus on high leakage markets iv) labelling our products to provide clear guidance to consumers on how to dispose of our packaging

PROGRAM LEADERSHIP 

Understand and leverage the Mars Wrigley Operating Model to align a clear plan, mobilise appropriate resources, and track and report progress across regional, global, and functional leadership forums. Chair the Global Packaging Sustainability Leadership Team and report to the Positive Societal Impact Management Business Review and Steerco, in partnership with the Mars Wrigley Chief Sustainability Officer.

TEAM LEADERSHIP 

Line Manage program managers in each of four Mars Wrigley geographic regions and lead a wider community of managers working across regions and globes to ensure a cohesive and aligned effort of this complex program.

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT 

Represent Mars Wrigley Packaging Sustainability with segment leadership, corporate leadership and external partnership and communications forums In order to create a positive impression and reputation for the program and to build the alliances needed to advance the work.

SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT

Maintain an up to date understanding of the trends and implications of actions by regulators, customers, consumers and peer companies. Remain abreast of the latest opportunities and innovation opportunities both with material suppliers and the waste management sector. Undestand the perspective of the different regions and functions of Mars Wrigley with regards to packaging sustainability and other interdependent business initiatives, as well as the perspective of Mars Corporate and the other Mars business segments.
