We’re a large charity, blessed to have the support of over 11,000 staff and nearly 40,000 volunteers, all of whom help to look after some of the most beautiful places in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This means there is always someone on hand to help achieve our strategy to address unequal access to nature, beauty and history.
Supported by national and regional specialists the General Manager is a leadership role, with the autonomy and independence to adapt our national strategy into local plans that respond to the local environment and context, ensuring that we care for places of historic interest and natural beauty for ever.
With our origins over 125 years ago, we know we have a traditional identity but we’re working hard to diversify as we develop and grow our important inclusion work. The properties you’ll look after are amongst the most dynamic and play a leading role in helping us to achieve the ambition of being for everyone. Sitting within our broader group of London and urban properties you'll help us to reach an ever more diverse audience.
This job is first and foremost about people with a large proportion of your time spent supporting your teams in their work and in building and maintaining the multiple stakeholder relationships that support and benefit from the properties.
In addition, you'll oversee the development and delivery of the property business plan, setting an exciting vision for the future and translating that into project delivery, sustainable finances and fundraising plans, all of which helps to ensure that your properties are well cared for and maintained to the highest standards of conservation possible.
This role will suit you if you love working with people and recognise the importance of listening, being inquisitive and valuing the diversity of thought that comes from working in partnership with communities.
You'll be an experienced leader, comfortable managing visitor operations and the associated risks. With experience developing external relationships, managing and/or overseeing projects and with a good grasp of cost management and financial planning.
You'll be resilient and have a strong sense of purpose, it isn’t all tea and cake. Happy to work independently and as part of a team as the situation suits, someone who is flexible and eager to learn will excel.
Our charitable purpose is to promote and preserve places of historic interest and natural beauty for the benefit of the nation. Whilst we don’t necessarily need someone who is a deep expert it is important to have an empathy and interest in helping to share our beautiful and interesting places with the nation.
The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
Wherever you’re from, and whatever your background, we want to hear from you – and it doesn’t matter if you’re jam first, cream first, or even if you don’t like scones at all. Everyone is welcome
