Summary

This is a very special role for a very magical garden, spanning many designers and horticultural varieties. We can provide you with the opportunity to work, learn and grow in a special place and are looking for a very special gardener. The job is varied, dead heading our spectacular Iceberg rose adorning the amazing garden wall whilst enjoying the scent. A variety of annual, herbaceous and shrub borders will keep you busy throughout the year with their upkeep and seasonal changes. There is of course our award winning organic and no dig kitchen garden, always in need of successional planting to provide bountiful supply to the café and our visitors. Also tending to our hugely popular banana palm, orchard, and wildflower meadow. The property team have ambition to develop the garden further in the rose garden and around the lakeside gardens. It’s a busy job but a tranquil and beautiful place to work.

The salary is circa £20,721 with a pay review pending but will depend on experience and the many skills we think a gardener should have.

What it's like to work here

This 18th century Palladian house is set within 300-acres of parkland. The ambitious team are focused on making Nostell Priory one of Yorkshire’s most high profile visitor attractions and are looking for creative hard-working people who will bring ideas and energy to the property. What you'll be doing

As a hands-on Gardener, you’ll assist in making sure that the gardens are maintained to a high standard. You’ll be passionate and enthused and knowledgeable about the varied plants within the garden. This role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects. You'll be helping with hard and soft landscaping and general maintenance of the garden, such as mulching, pruning, leaf clearing and weeding. You’ll support with the planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, fruit and vegetable garden. You’ll be helping to cut the hedges and mow our fine lawns. As part of the garden and team you will ensure the highest standards are maintained and healthy plants are available for our visitors to enjoy.

You’ll also support garden volunteers and help them to make the most of their time here. You’ll be expected to interact with the public on a daily basis, answering the many questions, or help out with gardening workshops, tours and helping set up events when needed. Weekend work as part of a rota to cover both garden and parkland - playground, paths, litter and bin checks, deal with requests from visitors and support the Duty Manager as required.

Who we're looking for

To be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate the below:

  • Trained as a professional gardener/horticulturalist with a good level of practical experience.
  • RHS Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Have proven practical gardening/horticulture experience, as well as a strong knowledge of plants
  • Confidence to participate in garden activities and events
  • Competence with machinery/equipment use and maintenance; including tractors, chainsaws, and pedestrian mowers with accreditation as required for Health and Safety compliance.
