Project Overview

Bechtel Nuclear, Security & Environmental (NS&E) is on the Northrop Grumman Corp. team preparing to deliver the U.S. Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) system of inter-continental ballistic missiles and launch infrastructure.  GBSD is a vital U.S. Air Force program designed to modernize the nation’s aging force of inter-continental ballistic missiles, which make up the ground element of the nuclear deterrent.  As part of the Northrop Grumman GBSD nationwide team, Bechtel will provide launch system design, construction, and integration.

A major contractor for the United States and allied governments, Bechtel has handled such efforts as chemical weapons demilitarization projects, missile-defense, infrastructure, base operations, procurement and project management, and restoration and recovery spanning half a century. We use our expertise to help our customers securely and effectively transform mission delivery. 

Position Summary

This position is for a Lead Senior Pipe Stress/Pipe Support Engineer who will lead and prepare Stress & Support calculations. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs. This role will specifically support the USAF Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) program's Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase. The GBSD program is the weapon system replacement for the Minuteman III missile systems.  Our team is supporting Northrop Grumman and the USAF’s nuclear deterrence mission to modernize this ground-based leg of the nuclear triad. This position is responsible for direct production of design work by Bechtel as well as for coordinating the scope and integration of work. We are seeking a Lead Stress/Support Engineer that has the ablity to lead/schedule work, review pipe layouts and approve the support types & locations. Should be able to perform calculations pipe support calcuations as required where standard type supports cannot be utilized. 

Job Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • Performing pipe stress analysis/stress review of systems in accordance with DoD UFC standards & ASME B31.3 or applicable Code where required.
  • Development & application of typical pipe supports and/or creation of pipe support calculations/drawings for engineered pipe supports as required.
  • The stress work includes the modeling of the piping systems to verify piping flexibility, stability and qualification of equipment nozzle loads.
  • Candidate should also be able to provide structural designs for pipe supports in accordance with AISC.
  • Perform coordination review of specifications and other documents prepared by others.
  • Candidate should possess a knowledge of OSHA, NFPA and piping codes.
  • Knowledge & application of DoD standards, IBC, ASME B31.3 for piping, plumbing codes and ASHRAE standards.
  • Software applications to be used are AutoPipe for pipe Stress analysis and GT Strudl or hand calculations for pipe support structural design. 

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Level 1 - BS degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university and 9 years of related experience or in lieu of degree, 15 years of relevant experience.
  • Level 2  - BS degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university and 13 years of related experience or in lieu of degree, 19 years of relevant experience.
  • US citizenship is required per contract requirement. 
  • Possess active security clearance or ability to obtain security clearance.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to review piping layouts & support requirements per DoD standards/ASME B31.3 and approve designs.
  • Hands-on experience using AutoPipe & GT Strudl.
  • Engineer - BS degree in engineering with 15 years of experience.
  • Possess active security clearance or ability to obtain security clearance.
  • US Citizenship required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous DoD project experience for Risk Catagory 5 facilities.
  • PE Registration (CA prefered).
  • Previous Bechtel project experience.
