Responsibilities

The Lab Manager provides non-routine analytical support to the entire site’s chemical operation, works closely with analytical experts located at other Eastman locations and at our customer’s labs, and manages the day-to-day work of the site lab technician(s) and shift analysts. The Lab Manager is also responsible for site quality management.    

The Lab Manager will provide leadership to drive a Zero Incident Culture and ensure that process and personnel safety is properly executed daily. 

The position requires thorough knowledge of analytical chemistry and requires the ability for planning and conducting independent work.  The Lab Manager must be very customer oriented.  As Lab Manager, this individual manages a department budget of >$1,000K and the individual is responsible for the quality of laboratory procedures, personnel training, coaching and personnel performance.  

Typical Duties: 

Typical Lab duties will include, but not be limited to, the following: 
•    Demonstrate a commitment to safety and reinforce safe behaviors with the staff
•    Develop and perform laboratory tests as well as providing technical support to aid unit process improvement goals or troubleshooting efforts
•    Liaison with other analytical expertise located at other Eastman or customer locations
•    Manage the activities of the lab support staff of technician(s) and hourly analysts
•    Manage the laboratory department budget
•    Identify and communicate the lab capital needs
•    Ensure that lab equipment is properly serviced and supplies are properly maintained.  Troubleshoot when neccesary
•    Coordinate with other service organizations to ensure that the lab facilities are properly maintained
•    See that the LIMS system for reporting data is properly maintained, that COAs to customers are accurate and timely, and that all environmental monitoring and reporting is per schedule
•    Maintain the Lab SharePoint site appropriately. 
•    Ensure the accuracy of lab procedures and documentation
•    Ensure the staff is properly trained in the safe use of all equipment and that training is properly documented
•    Ensure lab compliance with ISO 9001 and cGMP requirements specific to the products

Typical site quality management duties will include, but not be limited to, the following: 
•    Communicate and implement the Eastman Quality Policy
•    Approve, issue, and manage site quality management system documents
•    Ensure site compliance with ISO 9001 and cGMP requirements specific to the products
•    Manage ISO 9001 and cGMP site audits by 3rd parties as well as routine compliance activities of other site organizations
•    Lead department and site management level quality management reviews
•    Schedule and facilitate customer audits
•    Plan and schedule required internal audits
•    Perform internal audits when scheduled
•    Serve as the site steward for complaint management
•    Manage the Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) system non-conformances and audit findings
 

Qualifications

Experience/Education: 
•    Bachelor and/or Master of Science degree in Chemistry is required. 
•    Approximately five years of experience working in a chemical plant or refinery laboratory
•    Lab supervisory experience is desired but not required

Skills and Special Requirements/Licensing: 
•    Familiarity with chemical laboratory techniques; especially GC, LC, and ICP.
•    Familiarity with quality management standards; ISO
•    Ability to effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, with all groups, contractors, and vendors
•    Ability to organize, delegate and manage projects
•    Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office

•    While performing duties of this job, would occasionally be required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tools or controls 
•    Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds 
•    Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
•    Occasionally work outside a standard 40-hour schedule.
