Job Description
The Geotechnical Field Engineer will supervise and support geotechnical engineering activities for construction of the Intel Cardinal Phase 1 Fab and Support Buildings, a semiconductor manufacturing facility, known as the Cardinal Project, in New Albany, Ohio. Work will be on the project site in New Albany, Ohio, for an approximately 2-year period initially, with the possibility of continuing on future phases of the project, or transferring to another field or office thereafter. Future work from a Bechtel office will require travel to project sites on short- and long-term assignments. Travel may also be required to other Bechtel offices and job sites within and outside the U.S. The successful candidate will receive technical directions from the Construction and Engineering team in the Bechtel Cardinal office in New Albany, OH. The position is based in New Albany, OH. The position will be part of the Bechtel Construction Group for the Cardinal Project, however, the candidate will also coordinate with the other Engineering disciplines within Bechtel. The successful candidate will report to and receive functional oversight from Bechtel Construction.
Responsibilities
Position requires observing and supervising field construction activities related to all aspect of geotechnical construction, including review of drawings and specifications, planning, field verification of materials and activities, oversight of earthworks, excavation, dewatering, compaction, sampling, testing, shallow soil stabilization of soft clay soils using lime or cement, ground improvement using various methods, deep foundation installation and testing, subsurface investigation programs, geotechnical monitoring using instrumentation, and other related activities for development of project site. Responsiblities include:
- Supervision of field work by subcontractors, identifying deficient or problem areas, recommending solutions in coordination with Bechtel Construction Group and Engineering Group in New Albany office, consultation with G&HES geotechnical engineers in Reston, elevating any issues to supervisor related to schedule and performance, progress tracking, attending daily tool-box meetings, preparation of daily construction reports, and generally be responsible for all geotechnical related activities in the field
- Candidate is expected to formulate sound remedies to solve problems encountered in the field
- Candidate is not expected to perform geotechnical calculations, however, is expected to participate in providing technical input for performing such calculations
- Preparation of geotechnical engineering documents (e.g., memos, reports, construction daily summary reports, etc.) and presenting the results to members of the project team
- Work will also involve communication of geotechnical issues to the project team, interface with outside geotechnical consultants hired by Bechtel or the Owner as necessary, and communication with subcontractors’ team performing construction
Qualifications and Skills
Basic Qualifications
- An M.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering from an accredited university with minimum 5 years of relevant work experience, or a B.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering from an accredited university with minimum 8 years of relevant work experience
- Minimum 2 years of field construction experience
- Must have legal right to work in the U.S.
Additional Qualifications
- Professional Engineer registration (PE)
- Competent in subsurface investigations, foundation and slope evaluation, earthworks, dewatering, ground improvement, and deep foundations
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and MicroStation for drafting geotechnical drawings or sketches
- Proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Working knowledge of U.S. codes, standards, and practices
- Willing and able to travel to and remain at jobsites in the U.S. and overseas on short- and long-term assignments
- Construction experience in the State of Ohio, or surrounding States
- Prior employment with civil construction or geotechnical construction companies
- Experience working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs and occupational health and safety
- Prior experience working on large industrial projects
- Experience in preparation and/or disposition of Requests for Information (RFI), Field Change Document (FCD), and Non-Conformance/Non-Compliance Report (NCR)
- Hands-on experience with industry standard geotechnical software and computational tools
- Familiarity with computer applications, e.g., LPILE, APILE, SHAFT, GROUP, SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, GRLWEAP, CAPWAP, gINT
