Project Overview:

Bechtel National, Inc. (BNI), Bechtel’s government services business, is one of the top providers to departments and agencies of the U.S. and British governments. Its successes include many large, first-of-a-kind projects in government site management, environmental restoration, defense, space, energy, and national and homeland security. This position will provide support to the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. 

 

UPF will be built by 2025 for $6.5 billion and will be a first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy’s largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provided enriched uranium capabilities well into the future. 

 

The UPF Project has multiple work schedules that are subject to change and may require employees to work overtime and/or nightshift when a business need arises. Most of the UPF project works on a 9-80 schedule with every other Friday off. Start times are flexible but the standard workweek is: Monday - Thursday from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm. The schedule on working Fridays is: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. Work schedule and overtime are to be approved in advance by supervisors.

 

Eligibility for this position requires US citizenship; the successful candidate must provide proof of US citizenship in order to obtain badge access to the site. Candidate must complete security questionnaire and successfully clear site access requirements check. All employees are subject to and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable. 

 

Position Summary: 

Bechtel has an immediate opportunity for a fire protection engineer with broad experience in fire protection systems design in Department of Energy or commercial nuclear facilities or power, refinery, or chemical plant facilities. The position is long-term, direct employment while working as part of the Fire Protection team designing systems in the various DOE and DOD facilities. You will be preparing technical reports and studies and design documentation, performing calculations using engineering software, and preparing specifications for complex mechanical equipment for the waste treatment process and supporting systems. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in process system design and will be capable of developing design documents, including piping and instrument diagrams and equipment data sheets, that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design.

 

Responsibilities:

Has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating Fire Protection issues.

Support project needs for design, design review, commissioning, testing, code interpretations, and walk downs at the project locations as needed to support project deadlines.

Independently apply the principles of fire safety in the development of structures, systems, and components.

Support Construction and Operations.

Develop fire protection system acceptance protocols.

Interface with internal and external customers, as required, for the design, installation, and testing of the fire protection systems.

Support the development of the fire protection components of the authorization basis documents and other safety submittals.

Support Department of Energy (DOE) and external regulatory agency reviews of the fire protection aspects of the design and installation.

Interface with management and multidiscipline design teams to provide direction, feedback, and validation of engineering and design efforts.

Perform Fire Protection reviews to determine compliance with applicable DOE orders, NFPA standards, and the model building codes.

Provide technical guidance in the development of fire protection equivalencies to the DOE standards and the NFPA codes and standards.

Support the fire protection subcontracts for fire sprinkler installation and fire detection and alarm systems.

Support the alignment of the fire protection systems design and installation with the requirements identified in the upper tier requirements in the Authorization Basis Documents, the facility Fire Hazards Analysis documents, and the Engineering Basis of Design documents.

 

Basic Qualifications:

Grade 23: BS Degree in Engineering (preferably Fire Protection) from an accredited university, with at least 1 years of progressive related experience.

Grade 24: BS Degree in Engineering (preferably Fire Protection) from an accredited university, with at least 3 years of progressive related experience.

Related experience includes, but is not limited to, P&IDs, calculations, and specifications for fire protection systems and equipment.

Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Must have or be able to obtain EIT/PE certification within 1 year of hire.

This role requires a facility-specific clearance that requires U.S. Citizenship to obtain.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.

Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the fire, life safety, and building codes - including UL and FM standards.

Must be familiar with commercial risk management and fire protection protocol.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Registered Fire Protection Engineer (Professional Engineers License).

Experience as a fire protection engineer at a major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility with a strong background in fire suppression and fire alarm system design.

Experience working on DOE or DOD government projects, including experience with DOE Fire safety requirements (DOE STD-1066, DOE Order 420.1)

Experience with fire modeling using Consolidated Model of Fire and Smoke Transport (CFAST), and Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS).

Experience in nuclear or chemical process facilities, codes and standards for hazardous materials, and safety regulatory compliance is helpful.
