Job Description

Capita are looking for an experienced Highways / Civil Engineering Estimator to join our successful and evolving engineering and construction arm to work on Highways and Public Realm projects ranging up to £6m.

The purpose of this role is to provide business development, estimating and commercial support to the Highways and Civil Engineering division. The role will focus on the delivery of all Estimating requirements and maximising the value for money on all contracts and enabling growth of our civil engineering and construction team.

The purpose of this role is to provide business development, estimating and commercial support to the Highways and Civil Engineering division. The role will focus on the delivery of all Estimating requirements and maximising the value for money on all contracts and enabling growth of our civil engineering and construction team.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Measure and Prepare fully Priced Bills of Quantities and/or Activity Schedules for Public realm, Highways, Civil engineering and Infrastructure works in North Tyneside.
  • Be familiar with pre-contract and pre-construction environments and also be able to compile projects budgets and cost plans to agreed timescales
  • Carry out take-offs from drawings either by hand or preferably using CAD software.
  • Carry out full appraisals and comparisons of tender returns.
  • Carry out rate build-ups from site output data.
  • Provide input into Project Programming and valuing of same.
  • Work closely with project staff to facilitate value engineering, plan and programme works.
  • Support Senior Management and Quantity Surveying Staff in the appointment and management of contractors, suppliers and consultants.
  • Effectively manage workload planning and be proactive in taking appropriate action to avoid pre-construction delays.
  • Support the delivery teams to keep accurate and detailed records.
  • Work closely and effectively across both business development, design and construction teams to support the successful and integrated delivery of schemes during the pre-construction phase.
  • Support the project Quantity Surveyor in preparing quotations for project variations following NEC Project Manager Instructions or compensation events.
  • Managing own workload and meet the project deadlines.

What we’re looking for:

  • Appropriately qualified in quantity surveying, construction management or similar
  • Demonstrate experience and ability to carry out the role competently.
  • Be able to prioritise work and complete all requirements within agreed deadlines.
  • Wide knowledge of construction techniques and outputs associated with them..
  • Commitment to become Chartered with relevant Organisation within minimum agreed timescales.
  • Good writing and numeracy skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Be able to communicate with people effectively in a friendly courteous manner through good presentation skills.
  • Hold a full driving licence.
  • Be proficient in a wide range of IT skills including CAD and Microsoft Office 365 packages

Desirable Experience/Skills

  • Knowledge of CDM and relevant legislation
  • Knowledge of project management processes
  • Knowledge of NEC forms of contract
  • Knowledge of MS Project or similar programme tools
  • Be proficient at reading and taking off drawings, BOQ’s and specifications
  • Knowledge of typical construction contract terms and conditions
