Job Description

Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are always looking forward. Since the mid 1960’s TfL has been using electronic systems to provide efficient, high capacity control of traffic, both rail and road. In addition, mechanical assets to support legacy road and rail traffic control systems are in use.  Some of these assets are becoming fatigued and life expired, requiring innovative and novel ideas to allow their continued, reliable use for the foreseeable future whilst the new upgrade projects are rolled out and commissioned. The TfL Road & Rail Traffic Control Systems Engineering Services team consists of around 28 staff, the successful candidate will be primarily working within the Signal Works Delivery of the team. Overall the team is located at two locations with a diverse suite of roles from maintaining legacy road and rail systems over 60 years old to commissioning the latest and most secure control systems and influencing the strategy of future upgrades and systems. 

Primary role will be to assist the Senior Engineering Lead to lead a team of Installation Engineers in delivering signalling installation projects and to assist in offering specialist signal expertise as a Signal Engineer. Assist in delivery of all work to an agreed programme and budget. Be a point of contact for clients throughout the whole project lifecycle when the Senior Engineering Lead is not available. Assist in co-ordination of activities between the Project Management Team and Installation Delivery teams.

  • Legislation & Standards – Assist in the production of, project documentation to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and London Underground Standards, such as Method Statements and Commissioning Plans
  • Domain Knowledge – Supervised Practitioner

Knowledge

  • Possesses a minimum of a Higher National Diploma or equivalent in a relevant subject
  • Certified to EngTech level or working towards IRSE license
  • Awareness of risks associated with their work and the potential impacts on colleagues and the transport system
  • Awareness of the TfL Vision, Mayoral Transport Strategy, Business priorities and financial constraints
  • Awareness of the interfaces and inter-dependencies between own discipline and the wider transport system
  • Knowledge of the different Signalling systems used on TfL

Experience

  • Experience of producing technical documentation or reports
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: conception, specification, design, construction, testing, commissioning, bringing into use, operational support and or disposal of assets, systems or changes to engineering practice
  • Experience of managing small multi-disciplinary engineering teams or applying engineering principles to resolve low complexity technical challenges
  • Experience of applying engineering procedures to support low risk / complexity projects or operational activities
  • Experience of building relationships with the organisation, clients and stakeholders
