The Estee Lauder Companies has ambitious corporate responsibility/citizenship and sustainability goals directed towards reducing the Company’s impact on people and the planet. These goals complement the strong compliance foundation that is managed by the ISO 14001 environmental & safety management system. This position works in partnership with the Global Environment, Health Safety + Sustainability (EHS+S) team to drive progress in the region towards to fulfill regulatory compliance and meet the Company’s goals. This role will influence and support all environmental, health and safety activities across the EMEA region with a specific focus on EHS+S in retail operations (field, counter and stores). This role will partner and influence corporate functional departments locally to ensure regulatory gap assessments and follow-up, environmental/safety culture development, energy efficiency, waste reduction, recycling and optimal water utilization, progress to goals and technical support This role will be based in Paris, France.
Primary objectives:
1. Support the EHS strategy and KPI’s for the region.
2. Collaborate with brands, affiliates and Global EHS+S to drive progress.
3. Execute activities and projects of the EHS+S Department within a regional environment, to ensure that environmental health and safety risks are kept to a minimum through effective compliance with EHS policies, procedures and legislation.
4. Provide Health, Safety and Environmental training and instruction, assist with the promotion of environmental health & safety policies, procedures & operational practices, to provide advice and assist in environmental health & safety projects within their sphere of competency.
5. Ensure that operating facilities are in compliance with applicable laws and conforming to the corporate Environmental and Safety Management System (ESMS) requirements. Support the ESMS ensuring alignment with current legislation and corporate requirements.
6. Support a culture of safety consciousness and continuous improvement.
• Keep abreast of EHS regulations and provide regulatory guidance to the country operations regarding new or updated regulatory requirements and complete regulatory gap assessments across the operations.
• Ensure appropriate implementation of the environmental and safety management system in conformance with legal requirements and ELC standards.
• Develop and amend site EHS policies and procedures as required by business needs and changing legislation.
• Actively prepare for EHS regulatory inspections.
• Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses. Conduct root cause analysis. Share Safety Alerts and Best Practices.
• Work in conjunction with key stakeholders to assist in the compilation of Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work, policy writing, training and Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) programs.
• Develop and deliver health and safety training to encourage safe working practices. Direct training activities for EHS, including development of EHS training in multiple formats (classroom, online, webinar, etc.) as needed.
• Maintain all records – in both paper and electronic format.
• Undertake monthly reporting on Key EHS metrics as required at both site and corporate levels.
• Provide any EHS support as required at Department / Corporate level meetings including Health & Safety Committee meeting attendance.
• Assist in the specification / selection of PPE.
• Control and administer the onsite fire team and fire marshals, devise a program of fire evacuation drills across the site and carry out the program.
• Coordinate Fire Risk Assessments ensuring controls are in place to meet legal requirements. Maintain relationship with insurance company in regard to fire/risk protection.
• Ensure effective management of hazardous and non-hazardous waste collections from site is in place to meet corporate and legal requirements.
• Maintain an awareness of new and existing relevant laws, rules and regulations, and takes actions appropriate to ensure timely compliance and communication to appropriate departments.
• Ensure close communication with both regional and Global EHS+S community
• Assist in the execution of Citizenship & Sustainability goals in the region.
A successful candidate must be able to:
• Support the continued development and refinement of The Estee Lauder Companies (ELC’s) EHS culture in support of the organization’s Corporate Responsibility/Citizenship and Sustainability goals
• Provide technical expertise, demonstrate learning agility, and support ELC locations/facilities, (including all acquisitions) on regulatory compliance issues and best practices in Environmental Health and Safety.
• The position must be technically organized, have superior follow up as well as interpersonal skills in order to present information in manners which are usable based on a variety of audiences.
• Ability to adjust communication style based on the situation and the audience.
• Collaborate with other EHS staff to learn, publish and share best practices.
• Work with a geographically dispersed team in diverse work environments from distribution, offices and retail.
• Assist with the completion of energy/waste/water conservation and compliance assessments at our locations/facilities.
• Ensure that CPI/KPI metrics for EHS accidents, injuries, near misses/good catches, leading indicators and environmental data is collected, managed and reported
Qualifications
• University Degree in Occupational Health, Industrial Technology, Environmental Science, Public Health or closely related field from an accredited university or equivalent combination of EHS experience and education. Advanced Degree in relevant field preferred with 5-8 years’ experience in the field of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS).
• Appropriate, relevant EHS certifications as defined under the local EHS regulations is required
• Multilingual: Candidate must have professional fluency in English and fluency in one or more languages in the region
• Working conditions will vary and may include warehouse, distribution, retail store/counter locations and offices/training facilities.
• Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and be able to travel via multiple modes of transportation (airplane, subway, train, taxi, rental car, etc.) in various settings.
• Candidate must be able to lift and transport their personal luggage & equipment as needed.
• Candidate must be able to wear required personal protective equipment of the working environment which includes and is not limited to steel toe shoes, hair/beard nets, safety glasses
• Psychological and cognitive demands of the role may include complex problem solving, working at times under pressure or fast pace, traveling/driving, reading comprehension, calculations and writing.
• Capable of travel in region and outside without visa restrictions
• Strong working knowledge and experience with ISO 14001, 45001, and local Environmental, Health & Safety regulations.
• Strong presentation, technical and written communication skills to ensure legal compliance regarding policies, procedures, training programs and EHS Management systems. Ability to adjust communication style based on the situation and the audience.
• Ability to understand and communicate technical information, legal and ELC environmental and safety requirements to both site staff and key stakeholders.
• Analytical skills, accident investigation, risk analysis - cause - effect, statistical analysis.
• Self-motivation, self-management, ingenuity and ability to drive best practice thinking is required. Ability to plan own work schedule.
• Knowledge of ergonomics and industrial hygiene.
• Knowledge of behavior-based safety (BBS) programs.
• Good PC skills to manipulate and present data. Fluent in MS Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, Skype, Zoom, Office 365, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Articulate applications.
• Preferably, general knowledge and experience with Pharmaceutical industry or cosmetics industry
