Bristol Myers Squibb - Department of Veterinary Sciences (VS) located in Lawrenceville NJ, is seeking a senior-level laboratory animal veterinarian to join a dedicated team of laboratory science professionals in a supportive, team-oriented environment. The Director – Veterinary Sciences will help provide site and global leadership and collaboratively support a global biopharmaceutical company whose mission is to discover, develop and deliver innovative medicines that help patients prevail over serious diseases.
The incumbent will be the site lead for VS and responsible for an approximately 100,000 sq ft. USDA registered and AAALAC accredited, Discovery research focused facility housing a variety of species typically utilized in pharmaceutical research and supporting multiple therapeutic and functional areas. This position will report directly to the Executive Director, Veterinary Sciences and be a key member of the VS Senior Leadership Team overseeing VS activities globally.
Primary responsibilities include:
Oversight and leadership of the Lawrenceville program of veterinary care to ensuring the highest quality health care and research
Assure compliance with USDA regulations and standards that meet or exceed AAALAC Accreditation expectations;
Lead a large team of laboratory animal science professionals including veterinarians, managers, and technicians; manage and develop direct reports to realize their potential and achieve a rewarding and productive career
Manage multiple local, regional, or global projects and responsibilities that enable the highest quality in pharmaceutical research
Represent VS on industry, corporate and site-level initiatives and teams
Work closely with BMS departments responsible for areas such as research quality assurance, engineering and facilities, safety and occupational health and security; encourage and promote the 3Rs and maintain BMS’s Culture of Care; guide and participate in IACUC functions relevant to the ethical-use of animals
Provide scientific support and consultation to researchers; evolve and maintain standard operating procedures and guidelines
Participate in the assessment, qualification, and animal welfare monitoring of third party partners; participate in some veterinary clinical and rotating on-call coverage
Travel domestically and internationally occasional with consecutive nights away as needed to meet departmental needs and for continuing education purposes

Qualifications
DVM or VMD or equivalent plus a current license to practice veterinary medicine in the US.
Board certification from the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM). Consideration may be provided to other recognized AVMA specialty certifications.
5+ years leadership experience within large, complex programs or teams.
Expert knowledge of the regulatory requirements and guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals in the United States and experience achieving success with related regulatory or accreditation efforts.
Applicable clinical and surgical experience across a wide range of species typically utilized in pharmaceutical research. Innovative surgical model development experience is an asset.
Ability to successfully collaborate and develop effective working relationships with research and VS staff.
Experience with new and innovative facility design and vivarium integrations is an asset.
Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a collaborative team while leading and energizing others to reach goals.
Ability to prioritize, balance and be accountable for multiple responsibilities while demonstrating the highest values, resiliency and emotional intelligence.
This position will require the employee to work with chemical, radiological, or biological agents that may be hazardous to health if mishandled. Employees will be required to follow all safety procedures and use personal protective clothing/equipment where specified.
