Role Summary

The Director, Security sets the long-term strategy for corporate security, aviation security, and drug abatement at Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. This role partners with the safety leadership team and division leadership teams to ensure robust safeguards are in place. As a people leader, this role establishes strategic goals and direction for a team of leaders to actively support the execution of security and safety standards for company employees, assets, facilities, and equipment.

Key Duties

  • Establish strategic goals and direction for a team of security and drug abatement professionals to ensure robust protection of company facilities, employees and guests and that the drug and alcohol program is in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Transportation (DOT), state, and company testing regulations/policies.

  • Sets long-term strategy for AS and QX’s proactive approach to corporate and aviation security.

  • Influence across the company and provides strategic recommendations to enterprise leaders regarding world-wide security threats and geopolitical issues to establish the strategic vision and mitigation efforts to maintain the highest level of security for our industry and guests.

  • Represent AS and QX in all matters related to aviation, corporate security, and drug abatement with executive leadership of Government agencies (TSA, FAA, NTSB, DOT, DOD, DHS, foreign partners).

  • Partner with AS and QX Corporate Information Technology Services on cyber security threat defense and risk management.

  • Direct critical incident response and emergency evacuation management.

  • Oversee security internal investigations related to security and employee conduct.

  • Act as company liaison to Law Enforcement agencies for external investigations related to AS and QX.

  • Establish and maintains partnerships with operational security and law enforcement agencies at each of our operating hubs.

  • Function as a thought leader in aviation industry security practitioners, directly influencing industry workgroups and political committees in security posture and initiatives based on risk.

  • Develop people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on fostering strategic and systems thinking, development of talent, and succession planning across teams and disciplines.

  • Shape culture of the team through action, presence, and reinforcement of behaviors.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

  • 8 years of relevant experience in aviation or the airline industry.

  • 5 years of experience leading complex organizations, developing strategic vision and implementing measurable action plans to achieve key objectives.

  • 5 years of leadership experience, with at least 2 of those years directly leading people.

  • Bachelor’s degree, or an additional two years of training/experience in lieu of this degree.

  • Demonstrated leadership in actively developing and executing security plans for physical and intellectual assets.

  • Experience working with and applying state and federal regulations.

  • Experience establishing solid Labor Union relationships and clear understanding of Labor Law.

  • Experience establishing and managing enterprise-wide, facility and equipment safety standards.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present information to top management, regulatory agencies, employees and public forums.

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 75% of the time.

  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule based on business need.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • Experience applying risk management techniques and methodologies.

  • Airline/aviation industry safety/security experience.

  • A Master of Arts or a Master of Science degree.
