Within the Strategy & Business Development organization, the Director, Development & Commercial Alliances will play a critical role in executing BMS’ Partner of Choice strategy for strong and durable alliance partnerships. The Director will manage specific relationships, lead joint governance meetings with their partners, and support governance for more complex relationships.  This role will frequently interface externally with partners at all leadership levels and will collaborate internally with R&D, Commercial, Manufacturing, Legal and Operational teams to ensure these partnerships are successful. This role is expected to provide alliance management expertise and leadership.  Primary area of focus will be specific alliances in the Pharmacodiagnostic and Digital space, but could also support other TAs.  The candidate is required to have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with stakeholders at all levels. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Under the guidance of Alliance Management (AM) leadership, interface with internal and partnership leadership to ensure strategic and executional alignment for alliances, primarily Pharmacodiagnostic and Digital Therapeutic collaborations, including leading or supporting governance meetings, consensus building, and dispute resolution 
  • Execute strategies for alliances within assigned therapeutic area, and engage in joint-operational and collaboration decisions with alliance partners 
  • Serve as point of contact and face of the collaboration for BMS and partnership management to ensure strategic and executional alignment 
  • Ensure clarity and adherence around contractual targets, milestones, critical operational stages and joint-committee agreements 
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of assigned alliance partners; serve as the internal BMS expert on partner dynamics and the overall state of the BMS-partner relationship 
  • Work with AM leadership to map out relationship management strategy, oversee and approve supplementary contracting and documentation, and develop thorough understanding and monitoring of contracts 
  • Assist, in coordination with BD and AM leadership, with amendments, re-negotiations, acquisitions (options to acquire deals only) and terminations of existing collaborations  
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to internal stakeholders 
  • Represent BMS externally as a senior leader to both current and prospective partner companies 
  • Attend and engage with collaboration peers at industry conferences 
  • Ability to work occasional off business hours due to time zone differences of alliance partners and internal colleagues 

Requirements 

  • Minimum 10 years pharmaceutical industry experience, with a track record of managing third-parties 
  • BA/BS degree required, MBA or other advanced degree preferred 
  • Previous experience managing and influencing matrix and cross-functional team members at several levels, as this role requires leading interactions with key stakeholders from across R&D Development, Commercial, GPS, Legal and Finance 
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflict, influence at senior and executive levels, drive solutions and exercise diplomacy  
  • Highly collaborative with track record of building trust and strong relationships 
  • Comfortable working in ambiguity at times and adapting quickly to changing needs of the organization 
  • Experience negotiating contracts, and/or working with Legal and Finance teams preferred
