The Challenge

The Corporate Communications team is at the heart of DIO, sharing news and information about the crucial role that DIO plays within the Ministry of Defence.

Made up of four key disciplines; Strategy and Planning, Internal Communications, External Communications and Campaigns and Marketing, we inform, engage and influence a diverse range of audiences.

We are looking for creative communications professionals to join our growing team, who will help us to continue to transform and modernise our approaches and channels.

Working within the External Communications function, the External Communications Officer will be a key part of the team, with a focus on the delivery of communications about the Defence Training Estate to external audiences. They will work part-time, in a job-share role.

The Defence Training Estate is vast, covering over two thirds of the 240,000 hectares of land owned by the MOD in the UK and overseas. It is home to a wealth of flora and fauna, as well as historic buildings and sites of archaeological importance. The postholder will work to deliver campaigns and products that use the full mix of communications channels to promote the important role that DIO plays across the world in managing and maintaining the Defence Training Estate for the Armed Forces.

Working as part of a small, specialist team, responsibilities will include; planning and delivering communications campaigns and products that showcase DIO’s contribution to Defence across a range of channels, including digital; supporting Marketing colleagues to deliver DIO’s exciting, national Respect the Range public safety campaign; responding to media enquiries from regional and specialist press and planning and managing media events and interviews; collaborating with external organisations to promote DIO’s work on the training estate to external audiences.

We employ approximately 4,900 staff from a very diverse range of professions, and we work across the world; in Germany, Cyprus and the Falkland Islands, Norway, Poland, Kenya, Belize, Nepal and Oman.

Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities

• Build and manage relationships with regional and specialist media, responding to media enquiries and planning and managing media events and interviews.

• Build productive working relationships with partners both within and external to DIO and lead on the development of communications plans and products that support key projects and programmes, with a particular focus on the Defence Training Estate.

• Develop, deliver and evaluate the effectiveness of creative content for multiple channels, including digital platforms and social media.

• Work with colleagues in DIO’s Overseas Region and Training Team to ensure that communications issued achieve their goals and offer advice on the best products and channels to meet the communications need.

• Monitor and provide advice on the management of Training Estate-specific social media channels and content

Desirable Experience & Skills

Professional qualification (NCTJ/CIPR/PRCA)

Membership of relevant professional body such as CIPR, CIM or PRCA
