Role Summary

Alaska Airlines is seeking a Sr. Data Scientist or Principal Data Scientist to join the Data Science team. This individual will be translating business strategy into advanced analytical models and experiments to optimize Alaska Airlines’ performance across system operations, flight operations, inflight, maintenance and engineering, airport operations, scheduling, network planning, marketing, and revenue management. As an individual contributor, this role will be using advanced analytical modeling techniques and is comfortable leveraging statistics, machine learning, and optimization to solve business problems.

Key Duties

  • The Sr. Data Scientist is a subject matter expert in advanced analytical modeling techniques and is comfortable leveraging statistics, machine learning, and optimization to solve business problems.

  • The Principal Data Scientist defines the long-term strategy around statistical modeling and research, optimization, development and delivery of ML/AI models, project management, and solution design/delivery.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Sr. Data Scientist Required:

  • 4 years of analytical experience, with at least one year working in Python, R or a similar high-level programming language

  • A Bachelor’s degree with a focus in mathematics, economics, finance, statistics, business, computer science, or engineering, or an additional 2 years of training or experience in lieu of this degree.

  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of business intelligence functions, including analytics, data mining, reporting, report conversion, data cleansing, data modeling and relational databases.

  • Comfortable querying and manipulating data using SQL

  • Comfortable with math/statistical modeling techniques and familiar with common machine learning methods

  • Knowledge of visualization techniques, dashboard design, and decision support tools; experience using data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, etc.

  • Experience with descriptive and diagnostic statistics, sampling methodology, residuals analysis / ANOVA, and hypothesis / significance testing. Working knowledge of linear algebra.

  • Ability to work well with multiple, diverse teams.

  • Data-driven mindset and a proven history of continuous self-development.

  • Demonstrated project management experience.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Principal Data Scientist Required:

  • 7 years of experience in analytics or related area.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or an additional 2 years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.

  • Strong experience in data mining, cleaning, manipulation, and preparation.

  • Comfortable in Python, with 1+ year experience working with Pandas, Numpy, and ML toolkits such as SciKit Learn, XGBoost, PyTorch, and Tensorflow.

  • Experience managing program packages and repositories to be deployed as a service.

  • Advanced skills in SQL.

  • Basic database design experience using databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, etc.

  • Demonstrated expertise in visualization techniques; experience using data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, etc.

  • Experience in developing optimization/simulation models.

  • Strong knowledge of descriptive and diagnostic statistics (including Bayesian stats), sampling methodology, residuals analysis / ANOVA, hypothesis / significance testing, and experimental design.

  • Modeling proficiency in unsupervised and supervised machine learning, such as linear and logistic regression, KNN, cluster analysis, and Neural networks.

  • Demonstrated experience directing and leading team projects and project management.

  • Adept at communications and presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to work well with multiple, diverse teams.

  • Data-driven mindset and a proven history of continuous self-development.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
