Data Scientist Internship

The Data Scientist Intern will work on multidisciplinary teams to develop proof of concepts, minimum viable products and fully deployable solutions. In this role, you will create innovative predictive models that will deliver significant value to our businesses.

Team Background

Strategic Pricing Center of Excellence is a central team that works with Cargill’s various Food Ingredients and Bio-industrial (FIBI) businesses. Our mandate is to elevate Strategic Pricing capabilities and practices for FIBI businesses. As part of this, we aim to develop predictive pricing models leveraging Cargill’s vast data supply. To accomplish this, we are looking to build a team of data scientists who will drive this exciting journey.

As a Data Scientist intern within the Strategic Pricing Center of Excellence, you will work with pricing and other commercial teams, IT, and other data scientists to develop predictive pricing models that enable value-based pricing across Cargill. You will work on a multidisciplinary and collaborative team exploring, connecting and mining data. You will be working on projects that use statistical modeling and machine learning techniques to develop accurate and robust value-based pricing models.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Design decision making solutions and build tools globally relating to fundamental and non-fundamental influences on price levels of food ingredient products and commodity markets
  • Develop scalable machine learning components to generalize models to other data sources and product groups
  • Lead the discovery and prototyping of new quantitative pricing models and strategies
  • Benchmark and back test models to gauge accuracy
  • Maintain and enhance code repository
  • Liaison with software development teams and business users to guide development of user-friendly pricing software
  • Coordinate with the pricing teams on the model's correct usage to validate conclusions and improvement opportunities
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Master’s degree from an accredited program in Data Science, Math, Econometrics, Engineering, Statistics, Economics, Quant Finance or related degree
  • Must be graduating between December 2022 and June 2023
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years work experience in data science and/or data analytics
  • Able to complete a 12-week internship in the summer (May/June - August 2022)
  • Ability to commit to 40 hours a week
  • Proven ability to work optimally with individuals from a diverse set of backgrounds and cultures
  • Right to work in the U.S. that is not solely based on possession of a student visa or visa sponsored by a third-party employer
  • Strong programming skills, preferably Python
  • Strong background in statistics
  • Knowledge of machine learning applications
  • Strong problem-solving skills, and ability to anticipate future business needs
  • Strong analytical skills and able to work with large and complex sets of business data
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong Excel and data validation and visualization skills
  • Business proficiency in English
  • Some travel possible, including international

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior hands-on experience with predictive modeling
  • Strong SQL skills
  • Experience working with an international team
  • Experience with Salesforce.com/CPQ and Statistical Pricing Optimization tools
  • Experience using database, BI, and analytical tools
  • Business proficiency in languages other than English
