Job Description

The Data Engineer is responsible for supporting the delivery of data engineering and analytics across operational data and other data sources to provide predictive models and business cases based on what could happen across a number of business scenarios and opportunities.

Will work closely with and support the Head of Insight, Royal Navy Training Management Group (TMG) and Capita Senior Leadership Team (SLT) in respect to understanding business needs, data structures and relationships which enables training delivery to be data led with enhanced outcomes.

Builds strong relationships with and knowledge of all IT/IS suppliers and stakeholders including Defence Digital, Navy Digital, Selborne Partners and other applicable 3rd parties around data and data platforms.

Job Description:

What you’ll be doing:

  • Working within the Insight as a Service (IaaS) and data engineering team which includes the ongoing support of the future Schedule Optimisation Engine.
  • Participating in relevant change and growth opportunities providing strong insight, analytics and data expertise and knowledge including operational, business outcomes, commercial, financial, solution and delivery options. 
  • Working closely with and managing key analytics and data stakeholders within the Royal Navy, MOD and Defence Digital especially those in delivering future change and strategic direction. 
  • Provides expert data and analytics guidance, strategy and direction across all business areas including operational staff, management, client, supply chain and Partners including the development and maintenance of an organisational Insight and Analytics strategy
  • Provides leadership in the development of client-specific data science solutions
  • Identifying new opportunities and challenges for the use of data and analytics including collaboration with other business areas to identify ways to incorporate data and analytics into existing processes or offerings
  • Conducting research as needed into emerging technologies and techniques that may be relevant for the organisation’s use of data

What we’re looking for:

  • Degree in numerate subject (Maths, Statistics, Data Science, Operational Research), Msc preferable.
  • Good understanding of data engineering and data platforms including but not limited to Oracle, MS Azure and Palantir Foundry.
  • Excellent data visualisation software knowledge including but not limited to PowerBI, Tableau, OBIEE
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills. The ability to explain complex problems and technology with clear solutions and associated costs / implications is essential. Must be comfortable presenting to a senior level audience. 
  • Ability to find pragmatic solutions to problems and issues which ensures compliance but also meets the needs of the business and supports operational delivery.  
  • Demonstrates the ability to develop strong and trusted relationships with key stakeholders to support and enable strategic business goals.
  • Experience with data engineering, data management, and visualisation tools
  • A solid understanding of coding (Python, R, SQL etc.) sufficient to provide oversight of analyst’s code.
  • Experience within the Defence Sector and Royal Navy would be beneficial
  • Ability to be security cleared to SC level or above

About Project Selborne

Project Selborne is a wide scale, 12 year transformation of Royal Navy Training.  The contract worth GBP 1 billion was awarded in December 2020 to a consortium led by Capita to deliver and modernise training for the RN.  The consortia of partners known as Team Fisher includes Raytheon UK, Elbit Systems UK, Fujitsu and University of Lincoln together with 14 other UK-based suppliers.
