Job purpose        A Core Engineer is a technical authority within the Driveline Engineering organization with deep knowledge and expertise in a specific component or function. A Core Engineer uses this expertise to establish and maintain a knowledge database for their technical field consisting of design guidelines, engineering tools, and technical sign-off checklists. A Core Engineer also supports the Business Growth team with innovations, platform designs, and technical roadmaps for their responsible areas and provides design solutions for new business opportunities. The position described below is for a Lubrication Core Engineer and includes responsibility for components used for lubrication, cooling, oil routing and cleanliness such as the pump, oil, and filter.

Key responsibilities

 

  • Deep technical knowledge of fluid dynamics and heat transfer design fundamentals and the related analysis methods including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Able to determine lubrication and cooling system performance requirements and then cascade these requirements to each component to create performance, validation, and quality specifications
  • Good working knowledge of electronically controlled pump designs, including functions, failure modes, analytical tools, and validation requirements
  • Good working knowledge of oil specifications including the base stock, additive package, physical characteristics, and the impact of these items on the lubrication system performance
  • Good working knowledge of filter design options and how they impact the system lubrication and cleanliness requirements
  • Good working knowledge of heat exchangers and the ability to properly specify, size, and validate them for various applications
  • Ability to lead a global Center of Excellence team
  • Excellent writing, presenting, and training skills to document and share knowledge to the global engineering organization
  • Ability to create engineering process standards such as: design guideline, design criteria checklist, and analytical tools. Maintain and present these documents as necessary.
  • Support the global Driveline Engineering organization as the top technical authority in your field
  • Excellent problem-solving skills for lubrication performance issues in both validation and warranty to quickly identify corrective actions
  • Ability to identify and apply common design solutions to a wide range of applications to promote component re-use
  • Perform engineering analysis and calculations to quickly identify component designs for new business opportunities
  • Provide a technical roadmap for advanced technology or cost reduction opportunities such as pumpless design solutions
  • Issue CAE requests and provide direction as needed for analysis of systems and components
  • Create and maintain generic component and/or sub-system DFMEAs and use them to define Special Characteristics
  • Create supplier technical assessment forms

What we’re looking for

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, Masters degree preferred
  • Minimum of 8 years of related engineering work experience required
  • Experience in powertrain, driveline and/or 4WD systems is preferred
  • Experience and/or training in the Product Development Process is required
  • Experience and/or training in the development and maintenance of DFMEAs is required
  • Experience and/or training in Root Cause Analysis is required
  • Experience and/or training in DFM/DFA is preferred
  • Manufacturing and assembly process knowledge is preferred
  • Self-directed/self-motivated
  • Excellent drive for results with the ability to coordinate projects from start to completion
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Preferred Software/ Hardware and General Training
  • MS Office (Excel/Word/PowerPoint/Project/Teams)
  • TeamCenter
  • Root Cause Analysis and/or 8D Problem Solving tools
  • Technical Writing
  • DFMEA
  • CFD Analysis
