Job Description

A Controls Technician serves as the primary support for the development, implementation, and installation of new controls systems, maintaining plant PLC systems, troubleshooting technical issues, repair or replace electronic devices, and trend system operations. This position will also have primary responsibility as a technical resource to troubleshoot issues for operations, maintenance and engineering teams and will conduct training for controls and electrical related systems. In addition, this position must be able to troubleshoot and repair operating controls systems during production and breakdowns as well as provide off-shift support to operations and maintenance.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Function as a technical resource to troubleshoot issues for operations, maintenance and engineering.
  • Assist in the installation, start up, and troubleshooting of control systems.
  • Maintain, develop, and troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) including Allen Bradley ControlLogix, SLC500, and CompactLogix.
  • Maintain, develop, and troubleshoot Operator Interfaces utilizing Wonderware and Rockwell Panel Builder.
  • Analyze electrical schematics to repair or replace electronic devices and systems.
  • Assist in regular troubleshooting and calibration of instrumentation including flow meters, temperature transmitters, level transmitters, and load cells.
  • Conduct training for controls and electrical related systems for maintenance and operations personnel.
  • Trend system operation and ensure equipment is running at design capability.
  • Develop and implement machine upgrades and improvements working with both internal and external resources (vendors, contractors, corporate).
  • Maintain hardware including valves, variable frequency drives, motors, solenoids, photoelectric, and proximity sensors.

 

Education/ Experience Requirements

Basic qualifications include:

High school diploma or GED required.

Vocational school or technical certificate in an industrial related field required.

3+ years of Industrial Maintenance experience working in a manufacturing plant.

Ability to work an off-shift work schedule that includes weekends.

Ability to participate in an on-call rotation coverage including nights and weekends.

Ability to read and use electrical schematics.

Ability to craft and troubleshoot 3 phase 480VAC circuits.

Ability to craft and troubleshoot 120VAC and 24VDC circuits.

Ability to program and troubleshoot PLCs utilizing ladder logic.

Ability to commission and troubleshoot variable frequency drives.

3+ years of proven track record using electrical test devices including multi-meters, oscilloscopes, and mega ohmmeter.

3+ years of experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

Ability to bend, climb, crawl, and work in confined spaces and hazardous conditions for up to twelve hours per day.

 

Preferred qualifications include:

Associates degree in a related field.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Previous similar manufacturing experience (food, pet food, pharmaceuticals).

5-7 years manufacturing or similar experience is helpful, with an emphasis in industrial maintenance, mechanics and electronics.

Experience working with Allen Bradley ControlLogix, SLC500, and CompactLogix PLCs.

Experience using Wonderware and Rockwell Panel Builder.
