Avery Dennison is a leading global designer and manufacturer of labeling and graphics materials, and is seeking a Controls Engineer to join our engineering organization located at the Peachtree City, GA Plant, south of Atlanta. Candidates who embrace and demonstrate our company’s core values of Integrity, Courage, External Focus, Diversity, Sustainability, Innovation, Teamwork and Excellence are highly desired.  The successful candidate will provide technical support to adhesives compounding, manufacturing, packaging, warehousing and shipping operations, including project work, consulting, trouble-shooting and maintenance support to resolve safety, environmental, production, quality and plant workflow efficiency challenges.  Our engineering team consists of chemical (Process), mechanical (Projects), and electrical (Controls) engineering professionals and we value both individual and team performance within a plant culture of recognition and reward. 

The Controls Engineer is responsible for maintaining the existing instrumentation, electrical and controls technology platforms for equipment and machine lines, and for envisioning and implementing the future technology that will improve overall plant performance and enable new capabilities and plant expansion. She or he will seek out and collaborate with the internal and external technical resources and capabilities   that are most knowledgeable, provide technical guidance to Operations, and implement measurable improvements in manufacturing and packaging process equipment.  She or he will focus on the implementation of Safety, Environmental, Quality, line speed increase, cycle time reduction, equipment reliability and waste elimination and on innovation initiatives. She or he will proactively propose and successfully lead major expense and capital project teams, effectively plan and communicate technical strategies with internal stakeholders and customers, execute and complete approved projects within budgets and timelines and assure proper technical documentation.  The ideal candidate will leverage her or his knowledge, skills, abilities and experience in automation hardware and software, drive configuration, complex circuitry, control systems, HMI design and ZeroAccess machine guarding to proactively identify equipment performance gaps and prevent unscheduled production downtime.  Additional responsibilities of the Control Engineer include:

  • Implement technical solutions using hardware design, software design, and protocols for equipment installation, startup, commissioning and for development and launch of new products.  

  • Provide daily and oncall-support (when needed) to sustain or restart malfunctioning plant operating equipment.

  • Lead the routine deployment of problem solving tools (RCA, Cause Map, PDCA, A3), including performing and participating in risk identification and risk analysis activities to support successful project outcomes.  

  • Facilitate and collaborate with other functions and internal capabilities to ensure project objectives are aligned with division and plant objectives. Present accurate information and effectively communicate orally and written to management and stakeholder teams.

  • Evaluate alternatives, write project plans, determine timeline and resources for projects. Create new and update existing drawings, documentations, and operational procedures. 

  • Develop a dependable (local) network of approved, outside services vendors and contractors to aid in successful project completion and plant operations support. Assess, select, and manage external contractors for project and service requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years of experience in controls or electrical engineering function in a manufacturing environment. A masters degree is a plus. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems (including automation control, AC and DC drives, mechanical drives and systems, PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and motor controls) and facilities systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to assess instrumentation, electrical and control systems designs for safety, environmental, failure mode, reliability, assembly, maintenance, operability and sustainability.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and projects concurrently in a dynamic manufacturing environment. Ability to work with others in a team environment and to actively promote collaboration and teamwork and to resolve conflicts.

  • Recognized project management skills and ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities, strong presentation and facilitation skills. Effective interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written). Ability to develop, implement, monitor, measure, and control functional improvement plans.

  • Effective organization and computer skills, including Google Workspace, MS Office, MS Project, MINITAB, AutoCAD, Mainsaver, Chase, Rockwell RS,  Siemens software, Wonderware InTouch.

  • Experience with statistics and regression analysis, statistical process controls (SPC), design of experiments (DOE), FMEA, Kepner Tregoe tools, i.e. problem solving, decision analysis, situation appraisal and potential problem analysis.

Experience in the industries of labeling, adhesives coating, paper, nonwovens, consumer products, personal care, infant care, automation, assembly and robotics, and packaging is a plus.
