Job Description

This position will be the plant technical automation and controls leader with responsibility for developing and implementing standard engineering practices for plant-wide control systems. Responsible for control systems support for both plant maintenance and engineering projects, programming changes, testing and start-up assistance. Provides automation support to the plant during production hours (24 hr x 5 day operation). Manages the change control process relevant to automation and control systems to assure the most recent programs are functioning and appropriate backup system are in place at all times. This includes but is not limited to: PLC and HMI programs, VFDs, and Communication Networks. Experience in Allen Bradley ControlLogix and Wonderware SCADA programming is required.

This position is also responsible for supporting the annual capital plan with implementation of Capital Projects and process improvements of plant equipment and systems. This position leads the process improvement analysis and prioritization system. Interacts with key plant teams such as Maintenance, Production and Quality in providing technical assistance to optimize equipment and operational performance. Maintains supplier and external relationships and subject matter expertise for assigned equipment and technical platforms.

KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage control system performance, security, data integrity, upgrades, disaster recovery and change control process.
  • Evaluate and implement continual improvements to plant equipment and systems to increase productivity and efficiencies.
  • Provide engineering services and support to capital projects and lead projects as assigned to deliver annual plant performance metrics.
  • Provide support to the plant maintenance department in correcting control system and equipment issues. Utilizes this support to enhance maintenance technician control system troubleshooting and repair capabilities.
  • Provide operational support to all plant departments to assist with problem solving, and corrective actions. Act as primary engineering interface to plant and corporate IT.

COMMUNICATION COMPLEXITIES:  

  • Represents Flavor Manufacturing to internal and external parties, responsible for communicating complex process control data to engineering firms and system integrators while protecting critical intellectual property. 
  • Responsible for communication to all levels in the organization, interfacing directly with the plant General Manager, Leadership Team, Middle Management as well as shop floor associates. 
  • Responsibly for translating complex engineering and control related matters to non-technical audiences across departments.

ANALYSIS:

  • Identify systemic process or control system issues leading to non-compliance with Company or regulatory requirements or reduced efficiencies and define corrective measures – technological, capital expenditure, skills, resources etc. 
  • Assess global controls standards and analyze technology changes for compatibility and determine direction to manage the life cycle of automation hardware and software. 
  • Analyze and troubleshoot complex control systems, network communications, and software to resolve issues impacted production. 
  • Analyze process improvement and capital requests to prioritize resources against safety, quality, and supply continuity requirements.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING:

  • Approve / disapprove suppliers – identify and implement strategic alliances that will be of benefit to the Company.
  • Lead the process improvement assessment committee to set priorities for resource assignments.
  • Approve control system standards and conventions for adoption by FMAp.

  • Actively seeks new technology or processes to eliminate safety and environmental issues, increase plant efficiencies and decrease plant OPEX spend.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Management of multiple external vendors that work on and off site. Ensure value through testing and verification of contractor work.  

QUALIFICATIONS / COMPENTENCIES / SKILLS:

  • Advanced Control System Knowledge and Programming Skills:  Ability to design and program control systems utilizing PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, Communication Networks, etc.
  • Basic Project Management: Knowledge of project management principles and the ability to apply the principles, tools and techniques to develop/plan, manage or execute projects or workplans to ensure successful completion (e.g., on time, within budget).
  • Engineering Skills: Knowledge of and the ability to understand, design, apply and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Facilities Engineering: Knowledge of and ability to apply engineering principles to maintain, run and improve operational facilities. Includes the ability to problem solve unique engineering issues.
  • Asset Improvement: The ability to use engineering principles to troubleshoot existing line and plant layouts and design, plant and dispensing equipment, dispensing systems, control systems and installation/maintenance issues in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Advanced Project Management: Ability to lead capital (e.g., construction) and/or high-profile projects that involve cross-functional teams. Includes the ability to manage large budgets, broad scopes, multiple suppliers and/or team members from partner companies.
  • Audit Objectivity: Ability to remain independent and objective when performing audits. This includes adhering to the facts and standards and not being unduly influenced by operating management.
  • Building Technical Relationships: Ability to apply technical knowledge and establish credibility with highly technical audiences in order to build technical relationships that will benefit customers or the Company.
  • Cost Accounting: Knowledge of proper cost accounting procedures including separation of expense and capital costs, assignment of capital to correct depreciation schedules and capitalization of newly commissioned assets.

RELATED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS/ QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 5 years in control system design and implementation
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering is desired
  • Advanced knowledge of Rockwell ControlLogix and Wonderware required.
  • Certified Automation Professional® (CAP®) desired.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in multicultural sensitivity environment.
  • Theoretical and working knowledge of automation systems, and continuous improvement tools.
  • Theoretical and working knowledge of Industry 4.0

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Food & beverage experience, and manufacturing experience a plus.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Must be available as needed to support multi-shift manufacturing operation.
