About the job

Summary

Please note that this role is being advertised concurrently with the Band D Communications Officer (News). If you are interested in applying to any of these roles, you will need to submit a separate online application for each one. You cannot be considered for or offered the other role if you have only applied for this one.

The SFO supports the UK’s prosperity and global market position by promoting stable business conditions through investigating and prosecuting serious and complex fraud, bribery and corruption and money laundering. Our mission is to reduce the harm caused by high level economic crime, and preserve and enhance the reputation of the UK as a safe place to do business. We do that by taking on a selected number of large complex cases for investigation and, where appropriate, prosecution or judicially supervised disposal. We also pursue criminals for recovery of unlawful financial gains. We are unique in that we both investigate and prosecute offenders and have special legal powers to enable us to do this.

Job description

We are looking for an experienced internal Communication Manager to join our growing, multidisciplinary communication team. You will be a proactive and confident self-starter, with a track record of spotting and driving through internal communication opportunities - from conception to delivery – to demonstrably further an organisation’s agenda.

You will lead our internal communication effort, reporting to the Deputy Head of Communication, assisted by a Communication Officer. You will be responsible for developing and implementing our internal communication strategy, creating content that is engaging, easily-consumable, which drives behavioural change within the organisation.

Working with the rest of the communication team and our expert lawyer, investigator and intelligence teams, you will creatively communicate the SFO’s story internally, help to shape the culture of the organisation and ensure staff feel informed, listened to and engaged with.

You will have a demonstrable, excellent understanding of internal communication - particularly managing change communication - and you will have experience of communicating high profile or sensitive moments or stories to internal audiences. You’ll have the confidence to brief and advise Board members on their engagements with staff and you will lead the implementation of all staff events.

A relatively small team by Whitehall standards, we all pitch in where necessary meaning we are looking for a team player who – while an internal communication expert – is also willing to become proficient in all areas of communication. This role is a great opportunity for an established communicator to expand their existing skillset; our team is responsible for press and media relations, digital and internal communications and public relations and information.

Responsibilities

• Developing a good understanding of the SFO’s work, the key issues affecting internal audiences and leading the development of our internal communication strategy.

• Offering well-judged and evidence-based communication handling advice to senior colleagues, including the creation of high quality products for internal audiences.

• Leading the evaluation of our internal communication efforts, demonstrating the impact had against our defined objectives, to seniors and the rest of the organisation.

• Working with relevant internal and external partners to maintain a forward look of activity and using your unique bird’s-eye view to make recommendations on potential opportunities and upcoming communication risks.

• Building and maintaining excellent professional relationships with all key stakeholders including colleagues, senior management, partner agencies and the Civil Service internal communication community.

• Driving internal communication content from the rest of the communication team.

Behaviours

We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

  • Communicating and Influencing
  • Managing a Quality Service
  • Working Together
  • Seeing the Big Picture

Technical skills

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • Technical - Government Communications Service (professional competency framework)
