Job Description
The Commodities team is responsible for over 250 million USD spend sourcing physical commodities such as corn, wheat, milo/sorghum, soybean meal/oil, barley, corn grits, rice, wheat flour and other products within the US and Canada. Managed derivatives spend totals 375 million USD across the US, Canada, and Latin America. Role is responsible for supporting the Senior Sourcing Manager Commodities - Price Risk Management (PRM) by enhancing Pet commodity hedge strategies (both direct and indirect) and establishing strong cost transparency metrics for the business through price forecasting and risk models. This role is challenged with delivering a competitive advantage for Mars Pet care via analysis, hedging strategy and risk management. This role must work across the regional Mars Pet Nutrition Business Units and cross-segment.
What are we looking for?
- Execution of all derivative hedging for Pet Nutrition North America and portions of Latin America including futures, options, and OTC’s.
- Development of hedging strategies to mitigate market inflation and providing accurate cost forecasts.
- Development of hedging strategies that are based on fundamental economic analysis and implement within the context of tolerance for risk at the Business Unit
- Provide guidance on which indexes to use in supply agreements to assist ingredient buyers in the development of price/cost models where appropriate with integrated suppliers.
- Cash impact models of commodity hedging strategies including: Mark to market, Maintenance margins, etc.
- Perform correlation and regression market analysis.
- Innovate risk management tools to enhance and improve costs and margins.
- Support price forecasting capabilities within the Commercial Sourcing Team.
- Analyze supplier and economic markets; identify and manage market risks and opportunities, review competitive insights.
What will be your key responsibilities?
- Executing derivative hedging strategies against $375 million USD spend for commodities such as corn, wheat, milo/sorghum, soybean meal/oil, barley, corn grits, rice and animal proteins within the US, Canada, and Latin America.
- Deliver value for money for Pet care NA given the dynamic commodity markets. Decisions in this area can significantly affect Pet profit and/or cause the business to cut investment spending to cover cost pressures.
- Prediction of costs, to maximize accuracy and delivery of the Pet’s business plan and P&L projections. Sets annual cost standards for all ingredients.
Required Experiences & Education
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, mathematics, economics, supply chain, procurement, engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 -10 years of experience in agricultural commodity price risk management and derivative hedging (feedstock) within the Agricultural Processing, Trading and/or Consumer-Packaged Goods (CPG) Industry
- Experience in managing dynamic business environments, where price stability, supply availability, and potential business outcomes are under continuous pressure and change.
- MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint functional skills
- Data Analytics and/or dashboarding through API feeds.
Preferred Experiences & Education
- MBA
- Proficient in SAP and MRP systems
- Experience with commodity systems (ProphetX, FutureSource, Allegro etc.)
- Experience in strategic sourcing including end to end strategy development.
- Computer programming
