Co-op Design Analysis Engineer

The Design Analysis Group at Mercury Marine is looking for individuals with a strong interest in the following areas: (1) Fluid Dynamics / Heat Transfer, (2) Solid Mechanics / Mechanics of Materials / Vibrations, (3) Internal Combustion Engines / Engine Performance Prediction, (4) Electrical Systems. The scope of the co-op will be tailored to meet the interests of the candidate and it is possible to get exposure to multiple areas over the duration of the co-op term. Design Analysis co-ops will work on multiple projects, and it is typical for an analyst to complete 12-15 projects covering varying aspects of the engine during their co-op assignment. You will:

Individuals with a strong interest in fluids will learn to use CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software (Fluent or StarCCM+) to improve the design of marine engines, drive systems, and vessels for optimized fluid flow and heat transfer. Co-ops can also perform experimental air flow testing on the flow bench and use the results to validate their CFD results.
 

Individuals with a strong interest in structures will learn to use FEA (Finite Element Analysis) software (Abaqus) to improve the strength and durability of marine engines and drive systems. Typical assignments will involve optimizing structural components of internal combustion engines and marine drive systems to reduce stress, maximize fatigue life, and minimize vibration.
 

Individuals with a strong interest in internal combustion engines will use engine performance prediction software (GT-Power) to predict and optimize the horsepower and torque of marine engines and determine how these performance curves affect the acceleration and top speed of the boat.

Individuals with a strong interest in electrical systems will use simulation software to drive development of electric components (motors, batteries, circuit boards, etc.) Simulation software utilized consists of 3D and 1D models, hybrid/co-simulation, and custom codes to create component and system level models.  

In addition to a great hands-on learning experience, you will also acquire the skills needed to work in a team environment supporting all aspects of the product development cycle from concept to production.
 

Qualifications of a successful candidate

• Current enrollment in a BS program with a major in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar

• Minimum second semester sophomore status with 48 completed credits

• Availability to work full-time (40 or more hours per week) through a full co-op term running January to August 2021 or June to December 2021

• The ability to enroll in a formalized co-op Program through your university

• Dependable, self-motivated and engaged learner
