Wherever possible, we will also aim to involve you with other engineering departments in order for you to learn about the various aspects of work we deliver at the Trust. 

We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Civil Engineer within our Wales & South West Design and Development team.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable understanding engineering first principles; developing outline designs to allow budgeting and programme of a solution, producing detailed designs and specifications to allow construction and solution implementation. 

 Additional ability but not essential, is the capability fulfil the role of ‘engineer’ during construction to check compliance with design.

 Location & coverage

 Our Engineer vacancy will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to attend our main hub spaces as and when required for team working a collaborative meetings.  Significant travel throughout the regional waterway network will also be expected to enable site visits and to conduct improvements. 

 Relevant Hubs: Gloucester.  

The regularity & flexibility of travel will be discussed further at interview stage. Regular accessibility to this network is essential.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Our Engineers are important to the success of the Canal & River Trust; the role will involve designing and/or managing the design of repairs on a diverse range of national historical assets. As one of our Civil Engineers you will be responsible for undertaking designs of technical solutions, preparing specifications and briefing documents for our direct labour force (Direct Services), contractors and consultants. It is an extremely varied and interesting role and whether you are delivering innovative solutions, managing the supply chain, or helping to define standards and procedures, you will be working to conserve and enhance our precious waterways for future generations.

Key Accountabilities:

• Investigate and develop cost effective design and construction solutions ensuring best value, taking into account user requirements and whole life costs where appropriate.
• Contribute technical advice during the feasibility, design, construction and commissioning phases for projects to our direct labour force (Direct Services), framework contractors and volunteers.
• Define the maintenance, repair and renewal works for delivery by the Trust ‘s teams and contractors, taking account of all statutory, technical, operational and customer requirements.
• Design and specify engineering solutions and, where required, act as Principal Designer or Designer for works, (in accordance with CDM 2020).
• Support the definition of the maintenance, repair and renewal works for delivery by internal teams and contractors, taking account of, all statutory, technical, operational and customer requirements.
• Contribute to the development and the implementation of the Trust ‘s Design Guidance, Standards and Specifications.
• Where required, provide suitable temporary works designs to support works by Direct Services.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills:

Technical:

• Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
• Confirmation of right to work in the UK (without sponsorship). 
• Education qualification in a relevant technical discipline, i.e. Degree in Civil Engineering.
• Experience of civil engineering design and construction preferably in a water environment.
• Experience in assessing infrastructure risk, desirable. civil engineering experience related to site design, land development and land use permitting. 
• Knowledge and understanding of historic infrastructure, preferably in a water environment.
• Practical experience with AutoCAD. 

General: 

• Experience or working within a diverse and multi-disciplined project team. 
• Able to effectively communicate with internal and external contacts.
• Has a good standard of written and verbal communication and proven ability to present technical data to non-technical audiences.
• Proficient in the use of a personal computer and business applications software e.g. MS Office. Experience of GIS or mapping systems.

Valid driving licence as your work will require you to reach locations not easily reached by public transport. Access to a vehicle is needed.

What We Offer

Compensation:

£34,500 - £39,500 inclusive of allowances
