Position Summary
Plans and conducts independent work in the Civil, Structural and Architectural (CSA) engineering discipline with the Energy Business Unit requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of design on a project.
Responsibilities
Directly performs or administers work of designers and drafters of in the Civil, Structural and Architectural (CSA) Engineering discipline within the Oil, Gas and Chemicals Business Unit. This work includes the use of 2-D and 3-D Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD) tools in the preparation of civil site development deliverables such as layouts, study drawings, and detailed design models and construction drawings.
Prepares or assists with the preparation of assigned material requisitions and technical bid evaluations associated with civil site development.
Monitors and checks work for compliance with approved design standards to provide quality design, reliable/safe plant operation and construction economy.
Prepares design and drafting procedures to standardize design effort.
Coordinates or makes jobsite visits, as required, to resolve problems and interpret drawings and documents.
Reviews or defines engineering scope changes, as required, for project management.
Endorses or prepares reports of work progress, as required, for project and discipline use.
Maintains up-to-date skills in Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs) relevant to design work and ensures that maximum use is made thereof.

Specialized courses in drafting, design and engineering practices, and CAD, ORA recognized degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, AND
Extensive experience in design and drafting.
Job shall comprise of Civil/Site design of an assigned scope of work for a Bechtel project, or for CSA staff group.
Work involves independent design or directing technical work of others; applying Bechtel standard design details, OSHA and or client safety standards, applicable codes and industry standards which form the basis of design.
For some projects, Civil/Site Designer may be involved with supporting the 3-D model.
Civil/Site Designer could be required to assist in cost estimates and quantity take-offs for on-going projects, proposals, forecasts and change-orders. Civil/Site Designer for some projects could be the responsible person for the accuracy of bulk material take-offs.
Civil/Site Designer shall receive operational supervision and technical guidance from a Senior Supervising Designer, Engineering Group Supervisor, and/or Functional Civil/Site Lead.
Shall provide technical guidance to subordinate designers, drafters & technicians.
May be tasked to provide on-the-job training of less experienced designers or drafters.
Prepares design and drafting procedures to standardize design effort.
Coordinates or makes jobsite visits, as required, to resolve problems and interpret drawings and documents.
Reviews or defines engineering scope changes, as required, for project management.
Endorses or prepares reports of work progress, as required, for project and discipline use.
Assists in the preparation of plans and coordinates the assigned work to meet the project schedules.
Job Knowledge
Knowledge of the application of engineering and construction materials related to the discipline’s design responsibilities.
Experience in preparation and checking of civil site development design deliverables (concepts, drawings, and quantities) for site layout, site drainage, rough grading, finish grading, rigid and flexible pavements, railroad crossings, storm water and sanitary systems, fencing, underground utilities services and soil retention and stabilization structures.
Knowledge of Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), industry and regulatory standards, design criteria and codes relevant to the discipline.
Knowledge of discipline Design Guides, mathematical formulae and design calculations used in the discipline.
Knowledge of technical responsibilities of other groups associated with the total design effort.
Knowledge of procedures used for the procurement and quantity control of bulk materials applicable to the discipline.
Knowledge of current 2-D and 3-D CADD applications and relevant Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) required to perform the work. These include Bentley MicroStation, OpenRoads, InRoads, Intergraph Smart3D, or equivalent applications currently in use in the industry.

Position requires:
Receives operational supervision and technical guidance from a senior Supervising Designer, Senior Engineer or Engineering Supervisor.
Supervision Exercised
May be required to provide operational direction and technical guidance to subordinate designer and drafter personnel as directed.
Contacts
Establishes and maintains communication with design and engineering supervisors in charge of related disciplines and with administrative personnel within the group or project. Consults with equipment suppliers, technical specialists and client representatives as directed to provide and receive technical information.
Qualification and Skills
Basic Qualifications
Minimum 6 years of project design experience
Specialized courses in drafting, design and engineering practices, and CAD, OR A recognized degree in an engineering or scientific discipline
Extensive Experience in 2D and/or 3D design/drafting using MicroStation
Preferred Qualifications
Specific experience in planning and executing greenfield or brownfield projects in one or more of the following market segments:
Natural gas processing including liquefaction and regasification
Coal, gas or biomass to chemicals such as methanol and ammonia
Petrochemicals such as HDPE, LDPE, MEG, PET, PTA, PVC and others
Carbon capture and sequestration
Solar and/or combined cycle power plants
Hydrogen value chain including reforming, liquefaction, transportation and fueling stations
Offshore and onshore pipelines
Desalination, raw water, demineralized water and waste water treatment plants
Familiarity with current process technologies and licensors associated with the above.
Additional Qualifications
Must have knowledge of CAD systems and application of design software & computers necessary to deliver the project objectives
Must have general understanding of cut – and – fill, roadway design, and open channel drainage and culvert design.
Must be familiar with heavy industrial design and construction.
Must be familiar with Digital Terrain Modeling using Bentley InRoads or similar software.
