Summary

The Senior Clinical Informatics Specialist provides guidance to Clinical Informatics Specialists while providing project oversight and direction. Promotes the understanding, integration and application of healthcare information technology in support of clinician/provider objectives, the organization’s vision, strategic goals and industry best practices. The Senior Clinical Informatics Specialist supports their team to drive optimal, efficient and effective use of clinical information systems and technology as it relates to patient care, patient safety, user satisfaction, clinical productivity and quality outcomes. The Senior Clinical Informatics Specialist will serve as a key constituent that bridges the gap between people, processes, clinical knowledge and technology. Works collaboratively with the Information Services (IS), Project Management Office (PMO), Health Information System (HIS) clinical/operational leaders, and other health care professionals in the pursuit of better outcomes through the optimization of the electronic health record (EHR) and other innovative technology solutions (i. e. digital health, population health, patient safety and quality initiative work). This role will collaborate with leadership through process improvement and supports program development and organizational mission and goals.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Collaborates with management and clinicians in designing, implementing and maintaining clinical systems.
  • Assists in the development of design specifications in support of new or modified clinical applications, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
  • Documents current processes to establish a baseline for developmental improvements of future workflows.
  • Validates work developed by informaticists and support teams.
  • Analyzes, recommends, and assists with implementing new and improved processes and workflows.
  • Provides direction to clinical informatics team in all project initiatives to enhance the effectiveness of team members as liaisons to system users.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary and process improvement teams to identify potential uses of the information systems and potential improvements in current use of systems.
  • Supports the integration and use of evidence-based methods, tools, and guidelines linked to effective outcomes.
  • Supports data analytics, including quality of care measures, to improve patient and operational outcomes.
  •  Supports clinical staff in the real time application of information to change healthcare delivery and affect patient outcomes.
  • Models expert clinical informatics practice to core Informatics team members and healthcare consumers.
  • Mentors Clinical Informatics Specialists in the acquisition of clinical knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgment.
  • Develops and teaches the theory and practice of clinical informatics.
  • Provides leadership on informatics projects including coordination of resources, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Facilitate and support a robust super-user program, clinical champion(s) and clinical informatics council at assigned sites.

  • Has an understanding of clinical practice as it pertains to the integration of clinical information systems/technology and impact on end users is essential for the role.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and effectively utilize resources with fiscal responsibility in planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Comprehensive review of current state workflow design and systems integration to determine what future state solutions are possible, including assessment of any policies, practices, or procedures that might be impacted.
  • Five or more years of experience in a clinical environment as an RN required.
  • 1 or more years of team lead or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare related field preferred.
  • Master’s in Nursing Informatics or related designation with system implementation experience preferred.
  • Informatics Nursing Certification (RN-BC) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), or Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) certification, or other related certification preferred but not immediately required. (must be able to obtain)
  • May be asked to travel to various locations in the service area.
  • May be required to lift up to 50 lbs.
