Chief Architect – Enterprise Technology

The Chief Enterprise Architect – Enterprise Technology is a member of the Strategy and Architetcure leadership team with responsibility for the Technology Architecture function of Enterprise Technology.  Enterprise Technology develops and operates IT services to support the Risk, Finance, Compliance, Corporate Functions and the office of the deputy COO (DCOO) function.

The Chief Architect is a thought leader who is required to define and own the IT strategy for their area, driving strategy execution through delivery of architecture activities. They will lead and build a strong architecture team to develop and embed business and technology strategy through effective business and IT partnership; develop achievable reference and solution architectures; support the engineering community in the implementation of those architectures and contribute to development of Group architecture strategy and standards.  

The Chief Architect is accountable for design and decisions in support of the domain, ensuring they are aligned with group standards, IT and business strategy, meet business objectives and satisfy all relevant regulatory and operational risk controls.  

The Chief Architect is responsible for leading the operation of the global practice of architecture within their respective area.

The Chief Architect primary accountabilites are to head of Strategy and Architecture and the CIO of Enterprise Technology

Principal Accountabilities

  • Champion the development and implementation of HSBC’s Future State Architecture (both business and technology architecture).
  • Lead and own the development and implementation of architecture strategy, standards and roadmap for the domain
  • Drive synergies across domain through consistent architecture and identify opportunties for standardisation, sharing and the reduction of complexity.
  • Introduce and govern new practices, processes, techniques, products, services, technologies and standards where needed against identified use cases, via the appropriate governance bodies.
  • Accountable design authority for technology decisions and leadership of the appropriate governance bodies.
  • Accountable for the identifcation, mangement and remediation of material design issues associated with major architectural activities.
  • Provide a consultancy role to IT and business teams where appropriate.
  • Provide full life cycle architectural guidance to development teams and ensure quality technical deliverables.
  • Stay abreast of technology trends and advise IT and the business about potential benefits/impacts.
  • Responsible for leading a commercially aware architectural design practice

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Lead, drive and execute the architecture strategy for the domain
  • Actively promote the benefits of architecture, accepted best practice techniques, standards and tools to other areas of the group and external suppliers where necessary.
  • Develop and evolve best practice both within HSBC and in the wider Architectural Standards community.
  • Ensure that the highest level of quality for all activities and products is provided.
  • Lead, build and manage the architecture team
  • Mentor and coach members of staff
  • Drive partnerships with technology vendors to influence industry direction.
  • Represent HSBC at industry round table forums & conferences.
  • Host internal and external communities of practice
  • Promote and embed understanding of the value of architecture and the appropriate use of technologies and standards
  • Lead information sharing across the Architecture community.
  • Build strong relationships with engineering and operations teams aligned to the relevant area, particularly the designers within these teams.
  • Identify and develop architecture and design talent within IT, both within directly managed teams and within other aligned teams.
  • Be a prominent member withing the global architecture community.
  • Lead the execution and operation of the global practice of architecture for the domain

Requirements

• Srong experience in IT preferably (not mandatory) in the financial services industry.

• Srong experience in global organisations in a leadership position as Head of Architecture / Head of IT / CIO / CTO.

• Experience in leading large technology scale change (USD $50+ Million) which improves business effectiveness in sustainable ways

• Track record of building and implementing business cases for improving effectiveness, scale and speed of technology support for the business

• Track record of using innovative, collaborative approaches to deliver solutions

• Track record of business architecture implementation and experience of process redesign and/or process simplification in support of efficiency and transformation objectives.

• Excellent written and spoken communication skills; an ability to communicate with impact, ensuring complex information is articulated in a meaningful way to wide and varied audiences including boards/senior executive management.

• Experience of applying modern architecture: APIs, micro services, data foundation, advanced analytics / Machine Learning and leading Cloud provider capabilities.

• Experience working in across breadth of architecture covering Business, Application, Data, Technology architecture domains in a complex domain.

The base location for this role is London or Sheffield but with flexible working, other UK locations will be considered.
